Ordering Liquor from Overseas & duties

whats this bullshit disclaimer I see while I'm about to order liquor from a shop in england:

Please Note: Your order may be subject to local taxes and duties upon arrival in your country, which are levied once the package reaches your country. Any additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by you; we have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be

Is that true? I'm buying this as a gift for a friend and was trying to save some money but I didnt realize I may have to pay duties

Can any1 chime in on this and their experience from ordering online from overseas vendor?

actually it could be worse, you never get it, One time we made the mistake of shipping wine back and it arrived a few bottle light, and there is nothing you can do about.

I personally never heard on someone actually paying the duties and tax on a small amount, if they find you doing it all the time, that could be different story.

It's an import, you're going to be taxed on it. That's why things in airports and on the planes are sometimes advertised "duty free."

Well to Quebec for example, you can't import any alcohol, it gets confiscated

Just how much booze were you going to buy if it was worth shipping it from overseas?

Ended up buying it locally as it was too much of a headache

I purchased a HighLand Park 30 & Gran Patron Bordeois

I got a fair deal but could have saved more if I was able to get them overseas until I realized I would have to pay a duty and it would delay the arrival of the liquor

thanks for everyone's help
