I did a fair amount of searching in this forum and didn't find anything on this particular product. I recently met some one who switched from standard coolant to the Evans product in his very highly modded STI. Before when running any brand of coolant, he would see an average coolant temp of 220-230 even with additives like water wetter. His radiator and oil coolers are huge and he's pushing a serious amount of hp so thats not too bad especially when compared to the N54 temps. He changed over to the Evans High Performance Coolant, which is more for street application and barely breaks the 170 mark on regular driving, 180-190 on a serious speed run or during a 4th gear dyno pull. The best thing is it cools down very quickly right after a pull and even at full temperature, there is very little pressure build up in the cooling system!
The thing I'm wondering, is has anyone tried this product line? If so, how are the cooling system components holding up? ie- electric water pump. Even if you have to purchase the prep fluid and a couple of gallons of Coolant from them, it's pretty cheap. I'm really wanting to try this as it may be a great alternative to the constant battle of oil coolers vs radiator upgrades. Having already upgraded my oil cooler and running a Dinan intake, my options are rather limited at this point it seems. I do the occasional driving school and frequently hit open track days and I would like to keep the operating temps down. Especially thinking long term on this car. I know that this engine seems to make great power at the higher temps, but just the pressure reduction on the cooling system would be a great way to thwart any radiator or hose failures down the road. Let me know what you guys think, and please chime in if you have any experience with this product be it in this platform or another. Thanks! http://www.evanscooling.com/products/coolants/ |

It's worth a try! You MUST flush the system of any water before using. They also sell a flush that does that for you. Our cars are aided with the electric water pump that you can turn on with an Autologic or possibly a BT tool.
I asked the Subaru Road Race Team running the STI in Grand Am Continental GS whether they had tried it (they were boiling/burning up everything under the hood), and they had attempted it but didn't keep running it for some reason. I dunno, the crew cheif was either not eager to give up info or didn't know anything. You can also check on hot rod or circle-track forums to see what they say. Hoerr Racing Products sells it, you may want to give them a ring. hprworld.com

No one has input here? I guess I'll be a guinea pig then. I'm a little less that a week away from having logging capabilities, but I have been monitoring the coolant temp via the instrument cluster service functions.
This product seems to be popular in large diesel applications, and not widely used in the automotive industry. Maybe it's just that no one knows about it. I'm going to call and them this week and ask some more in depth questions rather than just reading the FAQs on their site. I can see myself placing an order. I'll keep you guys posted and try to give good supporting evidence once I have logging abilities. Input is still welcome. I'm kind of surprised that there aren't any venders with input here? |

I called and spoke to their tech line about it 2-3 yrs ago. The guy I spoke with recommended against using their product once I told him the n54 had an elec water pump and built in turbo timer. The fluid is has a viscosity more lie thin oil than water so it takes more power to pump it yet it removes heat better. The concernI believe was around stressing or burning out the water pump.
The water pump probably isnt a ton of time and $ to change if he's right and it blows but everything might be ok just the same. Sometimes the only way to know for sure is to take the leap of faith. On a track you should only be running straight water anyways as its against almost every santioning body's rules to run glycol at an event because it's so slippery if you have a problem. water wetter and water are a lot cooler than 50/50 but oil cooling is a different animal.

I used this stuff in the water to air intercooler in my other car. It has an electric pump and has been fine for years.

I've used it in Diesels. You will need to do really good flushing if you decide to switch. You want to get all the coolant out and flush with distilled water a few times. Then you can go with the Evans(Ethylene glycol) coolant.

Hi MilehighM3 and Mookie,
I'm also interested in converting my 2006 330i. Have you had a chance to try the Evans and, if so, how do you like it? Peace and good journeys, Buelligan |

Even if the coolant works well in other cars I'd be curious to see how well it works with the DME controlling the Tstat. Could throw codes if it's not able to heat the coolant to an acceptable temp.

Hey guys, just wanted to post a quick blerp on the subject, I work at a local Euro Indy shop in Charlotte NC, tho we haven't used this product yet it has been a recent hot topic for a few of us and even a few of our customers who Street/Track their cars. So in the coming weeks we are going to be doing a few test runs with Evans Water less Coolant in my personal E90 335i and a Co Workers E36 M3. Ill keep you guys posted with results once the data is in.

My wife's e60 528i ran this stuff (not hard driving mind you) for 80k miles on her last water pump. New one's still running fine too.
I don't know how it would fair with the N54 when pushing it hard, but I'm not moving over to it. |
