Tinted cars in Philly
Hey everyone,
I will be moving to Philly in a few months and have a question about the tint laws down there. From what I read, the law seems to contradict itself. At first it says no less than 70% on all windows. Then I continued reading and it mentions that as long as you can see inside it is legal. Which one is it? I am from CT and the tint laws are no less than 35% on the two front windows and any percentage on the back windows. However, they generally won't bother you if you have 20% all around (minus windshield). I found a video of tints that look exactly like the ones I want, but will I be getting pulled over in Philly for them? They are 30's all around and if you continue watching the video you will notice as he brings the camera forward, it is visible inside and he mentions that. If these won't work, what is the lowest tint percentage I can get by with? |

Thanks for the reply. So do you see quite a few people with tints driving around in Philly (and of course with no problems)? I always wanted 20 all around!

No tint that you'd ever want to apply to your car is "legal" in Pennsylvania.
I have 40% on mine and have never had any issues. Actually, I don't think I even know anyone who has been hassled for tints in PA...

I have 35% and have not had an issue in PA. However, as someone stated no tint is "legal" in PA.

Depending on where you are moving to, you shouldn't have a problem but remember, just because people on here are posting they haven't had a problem doesn't mean that you're not going to. There's always one cop in every township that has nothing to do but meet their quota and up township revenues by issuing tickets for something stupid. PA tint laws specifies 70% which is hardly anything unless your registration has LIMO or any SUV or minivans that have factory tinits behind the driver and passenger windows or if you hold a medical card.
PA Tint laws are defined in Section 75 of the PA Common Statutes, specifically Section 5424 (e) (1); and it states the following: (1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sun screening device or other material which does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle through the windshield, side wing or side window of the vehicle. Note that the law only prohibits tinting which prevents a person from seeing or viewing the inside of the vehicle. It does not prohibit all tinting or tinting below 70%. If you do get a ticket, it is only a mechanical failure ticket. You might even get as lucky as getting a fixit ticket. none the less, the cost of a ticket is $135. It's basically an annoyance ticket as the fine itself is only $25, the rest is bullshit court cost and filing fees...Really? I know cause I just paid one...

From what Ive been told by a few police officers near philly is the windshield and front windows should not be tinted but you can go as dark as you want on whats behing you. I have 35% all around and havent had any issues. I only was pulled over once in a town known for pulling people over for tints. i just stay away from there now. Other then that I dont think they really bother you. Afterall, it seems as if most officers I know in the area, have dark tints on their own cars, so how could they really pull us over? But I guess thats the benefit they get. They can break the law, but pull us over for the same thing they are doing. I dont get it but. No problems as of yet.

You guys have to remember, getting a tint ticket is like getting a ticket because one of your lights are out. They don't need any other reason...trust me! Quote:

Do you guys think I can get away with 35% on the front 2 windows and 20% on the rear and back windows?
Apparently there are no tint places around me that can do 30's.... |

I have 30 on the fronts and 20 on the backs, 215 Motoring in Philly did it. Great job and cheap as well. I live in south jersey but am in philly once a week and have even gotten comments from cops that the tints look good. They really do not care unless they catch you driving like a maniac.

I had 20 all around, pulled over quite a bit. I use roll down both of my windows if I saw a cop... Then I switched to 35 up front, never got pulled over. I will probably do 20 for the rear windows and 35 up front. The only thing I don't like is if you have polarized sunglasses you can see rainbows/light distortion (whatever it is...).
