NO SOUND
Hi,
All of sudden I get no sound from my unit. I can switch to ipod, radio, cd no problem and I can see that the station is selected, the cd is playing and the usb ipod is playing but NO SOUND. Is there is a reset somewhere, what can cause something like this? Thank you. |

Same thing has happened to me just today. Playing fine. Turned off car...turned back on, no sound. Just as op said.
2008 "professional" head unit here. Any ideas? |

i had the same problem so i took it to a dealership to get checked and they told me that my amp was out! the car is out of warranty so just the amp alone was $1300 plus labor. good luck

I've also noticed that when the car's having this problem, my HU doesn't display options for the phone or iPod, even when both are connected. In short, it seems like the problem is something more than just no amp driving the speakers. It's more a communications/networking problem that resolves with a reboot. Sorry if this is terribly vague and un-specific, but I'm no expert in the car's electronics or car audio systems. I suppose that if this happens again and more consistently, I'll try harder to figure out what's going on. One thing to try to note would be if the car's warning chimes (seatbelt off, key in/door open, etc.) still work while the audio is in "no sound" fault. I'm assuming that the amp drives the warning chimes too, so it may be worth noting if the chimes are there when the radio is not. That said, if it IS the amp, I'd think that one could get a used one and install it for much less than $1300. I'd hope. Or for that price, you could upgrade the entire audio system. |

You need to know which system you have
If you don't want to upgrade then
http://www.bmwgm5.com/Logic7_6941681.htm if you have L7 sometimes upgraders sell there old one also. If you have a Hi Fi you could upgrade to some nice stuff for the price of the amp. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 The head unit does not indicate which system you have. |

I agree with jsunma, it is not no sound issue but processing\communication issue.
I have read somewhere which I can't find again that BMW dealership upgraded the sw version of the ECU and the problem was gone. This to me is a "WINDOWS" problem. Dedicated solution would be perfect. |

Did you check to see if your battery was low?
The BMW IBS has the ability to turn off some stuff if it detects a low battery this can cause a lot of confusion as it does it before you get a low battery indication. I have heard of the radio loosing its programming but a blown amp is more common. gbarba says BMW has diagnosed his problem as the amp.
