N55er has a question for the n54ers
Hello the almighty N54 peeps :-) I wanted to get some opinions about any of you that has experienced with higher octaned gas.. I have a 335x drive n55 sedan with jb4, Dp, cp and intake. I put in 5 gallons of vp103 octane in my tank with about 10 gallons of 93 octane. Left it on jb4 map2 and drove around with almost no effect in power but felt a better transition between shifting.
Have any of you tried 103 octane on a tune car and was able to tell the difference power wise? I am looking in to a 335is just for the n54 engine purposes and will pass on the n55 to my better half.

Wasting your money unless you're at the track. Since you're on a JB4, why not use the E85 maps. Just ask Terry what percentage you should mix it with PUMP gas.

Good to know, thank you... Except does jb4 have the e85 maps for the n55? Map 5 is the auto running and map7 is for race gas which vp103 is not.

You're not taking advantage of the higher octane on map 2. I would email terry and ask his opinion. I'm not sure if the n55 jb4 auto tunes for higher oct like our new map 5. We use map 5, map 7 or map 3 (meth) with race gas/e85.

Map 2 is just a basic 93octane + Bolton tunes for the N55 right?
If so, unless your car is experiencing timing drops before adding the 5 gallons of the VP103, you're not getting the full advantages of increase octane. Can you break down what all the maps mean for the N55?

Sam, as you know now the fuel has little to do with the power you produce if you can't advance the timing to increase the power through the tune. I'm not familiar with the maps on the JB, but with the Proceed I can run stage 3 map 4 with meth and mix 92 with E85 70/30 with really smooth and strong power delivery without any timing drops. I think you'll find that rather than spending $10 a gal on 103 race gas you can do the same with E85 @ 1/3 the cost and map 7 if you have an E85 source. Just make sure you do some logs to validate your fuel trims and timing... You should be good to go. Also, you need to remember when you start upping your boost, you may see some misfires at high RPM. A quick fix for that is reducing the plug gap or upgrading to a .4 or .2 Iridium high performance plugs. Have fun...
