335d Hesitates at 2.8-3.2k rpm

Been through a lot of posts regarding what to do or update when purchasing a 335d
So far ..
Replaced all Vac hoses ( made a small difference to the small turbo)
2x pressure controllers ( Ouch !! £££)
EGR Thermostat
Replaced Vacuum Tank
Boost hose looks clean and dry so not replaced it.
Oil feed pipe gasket was weeping so had it changed
Cleaned MAF

The car has had a remap via bluefin but i'm still getting a strange kind of hesitation between 2.8-3.2k ish . It feels bogged down until the revs climb out of it and then get a such a huge surge of power after that all the way to the redline that i am kind of discounting the map torque limiting. Ave mpg 30 ish

Any further investigation / tips ? I'm not convinced that the remap has anything to do with it... but will email them all the same.

***EDIT*** Taken Map off for a couple for days now

Not sure what sort of revs the turbos kick in at but it almost sounds like the smaller of the 2 (which would be at lower revs) isn't kicking in and then of course as the revs rise, the bigger turbo does hence the surge in power you mention.

Definitely getting small turbo action , it just seems to go into a lull for 500 revs , kind of a running on 4 out of 6 cylinders sensation just at the point when the turbos swop over (approx 2.5k) it then picks up. This is with the bluefin installed.

I did some testing this evening after fitting a new red boost hose , issue is definitely evident with bluefin installed , goes away with std map . I repeated this a couple of times and the problem follows so all in the issue appears to with the map. I've email superchips to see if there is anything they can suggest

But the characteristic was there pre remap. I always thought diesels were supposed to have lots of low end power, mine feels more like a v-tech!

It's doing something, but I'm not sure it's pulling as hard as it should below 3000 revs, I've next to no experience of other 335ds and how they compare.

I thought the small turbo only boosted up to about 1500 revs.

It was one of the things i did as part of the process. Took the sensor out and gave it a good old high pressure blast with isopropanol .. again it made a tiny difference.
Bought this ELM327 OBDII dongle and did some testing on the MAF ,boost , torque , fuel flow and all sorts and nothing really was looking out of ordinary

My issue turned out to be the Map , Went back to superchips with the query and same day they got back to me with a modded map which gave shed loads more low down boost and 3.5k rpm+ boost but didn't solve the mid range problem , after testing in the evening I emailed SC again , then gave them a call next day to explain and by the end of the day I had another map to play with which I very pleased to say has cured the problem.

The car now is a thug .. tickle the throttle and it gets really aggressive very early on , plant the foot and it's warp drive on tap. Very chuffed

I'll be honest and say I'm a bit disappointed with the original issue knowing it's the SC map causing the problem( as I have had my bluefin for about 5 years now and it's been on several cars and never had a problem) .It's cost me around 600 quid in unnecessary bits but the service i got from SC to cure it has more than made up for it. They never had any issues at all with them trying to resolve once I pinpointed that it must have been the map , always nice to get a resolution. Fair play to Michael for solving it , suppose most of the parts would need changing at some point so hopefully that's me sorted for a good old stretch now !

o0timbo0o- just out of interest did you do the above work yourself?
I am thinking of replacing vacuum hoses, I have spoken to my mechanic whom says the hose doesnt cost much its just a labour intensive job. I dont mind doing it myself as i am confident but just wouldnt know where to start etc

I didn't do all the work myself , The Vac hoses & EGR& oil gasket were done by my indie who charged me 90 quid. He used diesel fuel pipe instead of the std vac hose stuff , the diesel fuel pipe is slightly thicker so will withstand more and last longer and only costs 5-10 quid for a decent length.
The pressure controllers were done on a separate occasion and he charged me 20 but would be easier to change at the point of vac hoses as they lead there anyway.

The pressure controllers (£170 ish for 2.. both the same) i bought were a different revision from BMW which meant the mounting bracket had to be changed (£18 quid ) too which meant other stuff had to come off , he did say that as he'd done the pipes he knew what to take off so took him 20 mins to complete.
I changed the vacuum tank (£26) myself , took 5 mins but again if you have the part to hand this can be done at same time as pressure controllers
I changed the red hose myself , took about an hour and used this guide although this is specifically written for 535 and the pipe for 335 is slightly different. It also helped to take the airbox off ( 1 clip and 2 bolts) so you could work from above too. http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/foru...ne-replacement

Having changed the red hose myself I would have no qualms doing the rest of the work , it was just work commitments and knowing a guy who I trusted to do the work that made it easier to hand it over.
Expect to take 2-3 hours for vac hoses , and expect to have to take a fair few bits and bobs off to access connections and clips

Many thanks for detailed reply,I think I will leave for my mechanic to do as it does sound a lot fiddly and time consuming. Like you say I also have limited time and rather let someone else do it.

Is the MAF on top of the airbox? I might just give mine a clean but i dont have amy iso stuff so would electrical contact cleaner be ok? is it just spray, leave to dry and refit? or do you wipe it down?

Yep , its the mesh protected device that feeds from airbox into intake. Unclip top airbox cover then remove the jubilee clip and unclip the plug. Electrical contact cleaner should do the trick but I would not recommend touching or wiping it. The only concern I would have is using an aerosol based contact cleaner and that is that this stuff will freeze very rapidly on contact which may or may not cause damage to the sensor, maybe someone could jump in here and put me straight. I personally had access to a compressor/airline and sprayed isopropanol ( IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) whilst blowing using compressed air. There was a film of oil on the sensor that the isopropanol removed.

I have a superchips remap on my car currently and to be honest I have felt similar boost patterns. I had an Evolve remap on my last 335d and it was immense - I shall be heading back there tute suit !!

I think I wont risk using a electircal cleaner, where can i get some isopropanol from? is this available in the shops?

my car was all fixed by its pressure controller replacement (and vac hoses) bern goin well for a month then....hestitation between 2-3k revs, its fine either side of these but just bogs right down in this area. i've had my remap on for 2 years now with no probs. My small turbo oil feed pipe seals where reported to be leaking a tad but would be fine till service in Aug. I cant smell or see anything untoward.

my cars 335d, 56plate, 89k miles

Any ideas? I need my car fixed by Sat 22nd as its the Northern e90post car meet!!

Mate just get it to an autologic dealer and have him hook his gear up whilst you take him out for a drive.

You need the readings to know what is going on.

There is always a slight lull on these cars inbetween turbo ranges. My remap graph has the same kind of thing ... But not this extreme.

Have you considered the gearbox (do these cars have a torque converter ? ) as possible cause ?

Thanks for the reply mega. This is no lull in power, this is a f#%k all from 1.5-3k revs. kinda rules out both turbos as its in the range where there handing over to each other.

dont fancy paying out loads of labour again to get back at the pressure controllers, hoping the garage cut me a deal of sorts...

Who is the map by ?
Can you describe the hesitation .. is it the similar feeling to a misfire ? .. like it's trying to go but isn't allowed

You tried injector cleaner and a dose of ultimate with a higher dose of cetane.

Can you hear the small turbo spooling up?
