They are extra to the XI, or just in general? I thought all stock e9x had secondary cats...

Haven't heard of anyone doing it, just go to a decent exhaust shop and have them save your cats in case you want to weld them back in. I've heard from the 135 and 335i guys that it sounds good, until you add catless DP and then you may need resonators in there to get rid of drone.

you don't want your cats out. remove the resonator which i did and get bmw performance mufflers or after market like borla, magnaflow, whatever.
keep your cats. they are 400 bucks each, we have 4 and without them your car will fail emission (if you have any in CH).

No emission testing in my state except one big city 4hrs away, I may remove them but only because I think it could benefit me when I start running nitrous again.

According to realoem.com, the exhaust section with secondary cats are identical P/N between the i and xi, so I don't think the xi has a 3rd set of cats, I certainly didn't notice a 3rd set in my DP install, had it on a rack too.
