Greek Beer

Just got back from two weeks in Greece. I know you guys are beer hounds, so I thought I'd report on three Greek beers I tried--Alpha, Pils Hella, and Mythos. Alpha and Pils Hella were interesting, but not to my taste. They reminded me of Bud (not the kind you get in the Czech Republic), which is not my favorite (no offense to Bud lovers--that's why they make chocolate and vanilla). Mythos was by far my favorite. It's a tasty lager, medium-gold color, with a full taste that doesn't overpower you, and finishes clean. Best of all it comes in half liter bottles! (Also .330 liter bottles, but I avoided tavernas that didn't have half liter bottles.) Temperatures reached ~105 F in Greece during our first week there and the only thing that kept me going was the thought of an ice cold half liter (or two) of Mythos at the end of the day.

cant recall any beers I had there years ago, but Ouzo comes in mind as a late night drink on whitewash balcony and patios of Santorini, Mykonos and Kefalionia.

Did you check out the Acropolis Rich ? Any Photos ?

When we were in Greece, the beer was awful but the islands were beautiful. I don't think I tried Mythos, though. I pretty much gave up after trying a few different kinds.

Czech Republic - now that was beer heaven.

Thanks, Al. Good to be home. The Ouzo I tried was tasty, but you can't drink enough of that stuff to quench your thirst after hikes in 105 degree temperatures. There's another liquor worth mentioning, which is produced at the Vallindras distillery in Kalki (on Naxos). They make liquor from citron tree leaves. It comes in three forms, which vary in color and alcohol content. Very good stuff.

We visited the Acropolis, of course. The buildings are being restored so the up-close view is marred by lots of scaffolding and construction equipment/supplies (not to mention the seeming millions of tourists all jostling to get a look.) It's best viewed now from a distance, especially at night when it's lit up.

I have lots of pictures (over 600). I'll post a couple after I go through them.

Driving in Greece was an experience. I may post a note about that in a bit. Still jet-lagged--we got home very early yesterday morning after a 24 hour day.

NOOOH! tell the greeks not to restore it, are they crazy that why its historic. The last thing I like to see it converted to condos and shopping mall

j/k

well to keep my foot buzy while you were out, I've finally met some wholesome cyclist meetup group. we did 32 miles and it has all shorts of levels for everyones speed. I was a free-rider(drafter) of the first group, until get realized what I was doing and they made me work for it.

while we wait for your photo maybe I'd share mine here, consider it my summer vacation
.... the next ride is next Sunday at Poolesville Md Its free! btw

I guess you did Lights and Sounds while at Athens?

greece

Didn't have a taste for either of the beers. Thankfully every place I went to sold Heineken, Amstel or Corona. I did enjoy the Metaxa which was some sort of wine. BTW Greece was the first place that I saw the 1-series hatchback first hand. Not to hi-jack the thread but here are some pics.

.... I also like the fact that they break their dishes so they don't have to wash them
