Took apart my forge DVs. See red fluid. Normal?

Bought them used. When I push down on the silver piston after removing the cap, it goes a short distance, is very hard to push, then goes down further. Hopefully that makes sense. Is that normal? It was the same on both. Also, both had a little red gummy fluid/grease in the bottom of them where the spring sits. Is that normal or should I wipe it up?

Thanks, and sorry for this and the other stupid question. Should've made one thread, but just trying to get this installed so I can start putting on my REALLY fun parts...

The springs are supposed to provide resistance tension, that's how they hold high boost. As for the red fluid, I would assume it looks something like the stuff in the bag


Which would be normal, since that's a picture of the grease in a Forge Valve Service Kit

Yeah, that's the fluid. As for the resistance, not sure if I was clear. It is difficult to describe. It is very very difficult to push, like it is catching on something, then becomes easier once you get past that point.

Can you tell what color the spring is that's in? It's possible you have a bad/the wrong spring in. Here are the different spring strengths:
  • Green 5-15 PSI
  • Yellow 15-23 PSI
  • Blue 20-23 PSI
  • Red 30+ PSI

Don't worry about that sticking resistance.

Mine do the same thing. Unless you push dead center the fit is so tight that the you will slant the piston and it will bind on the walls.

Oh and by the way....that red stuff is Mobil 1 high temp synthetic grease.

Good idea to clean the valves of any blowby oil once a year and smear some new grease on the o-rings.

Also check those rubber o-rings to see if they are torn or worn. A replacement kit is available from Forge.
