335i 2006-2008 year question
Hello all, im a total newb and do not own a bmw ...yet..
Im 29 and have owned many cars in my life and was sitting in my POS stuck in traffic when i said to myself...Conrad...you work so much god dammed overtime its time you bought yourself something you really really like. After six months of going out and test driving everything from Kias to Fords to Cadillacs, i fell in love with the 335i i test drove. Now my budget is around 25k-ish and obviously that means used. So upon further research i have found i can only get like 2k6 to 2k8 model year. (the 2k9's that are up there are rather high on milage..ie.80-90k) upon further research i see a trend that kind of worries me. I see in most posts people complaining about the fuel pump failure. I have also dome some snooping and see that BMW extended warranties on these to 100k. But its not really clear. Now here is my question. Say i go buy a used 335i. From say a dealer that is not a BMW dealer and the car is not BMW used certified. And 1 year or 2 years down the road my fuel pump fails. Can i bring it to a BMW dealer and get it fixed for free? How does that work? Is there really anything i should know as a 335i owner (or soon to pull the trigger) Years to get or avoid? Anything to expect or avoid? Im also pretty darn handy and have been working on every car i have ever owned since i was 15. Anything that doesn't require a lift i can pretty much do myself at home. If that figures into anything at all i dont know.. Thanks for your time i appreciate all responses. |

You might get some better responses in the turbo section about the fuel pump. I don't own a 335i but I can tell you they've had their share of issues. BMW has fixed many of them. There are actually 2 engines in the 335i: N54 (twin turbo) N55 (single turbo (twin scroll). The 1M coupe and 335is use the N54 with an upgraded radiator and fan. The N55 (2009 and up?) out of the box has been pretty reliable and gets better gas mileage but the tunability and performance isn't as good. The N54 can be tuned to around 450hp. If you're going to leave the engine stock, go with the N55. There are aftermarket tuning solution for the N55 but people say the overal gains plus the throttle response on the N54 is better. BMW has thier own power kit that gives the aux radiator and fan from the 335is and 1M coupe as well as a few extra horses.

You may be able to call a BMW dealer, provide the VIN and see if its had the High Pressure Fuel pump recall performed. I have a 2007 335 and there were two fuel pump recalls, I think it was 2008 and 2011 if I remember correctly. I'm not sure how the recalls are worded if they remain open indefinitely or if they are a set period where the car must show up to be serviced free of charge under the recall.
Any way I'd try calling a dealer and see if the car has missed any recalls and if the car would still be eligible for getting any of those missed recalls. |
