335i Service

Hi all

I have a "big" service coming up in Sept according to the OBC. Car is close to 60k miles.

Does anyone know what is this service made up of?

(Spark plugs changed last year and still have another 12k according to the OBC)

(Oil change due in Dec or another 6k....)

There is no such thing as a 'big' service unless all the i-drive listed items come together at the same time. I recently had oil change, brake fluid, air filter and 'check' for £268 at a stealer at the 84k mile mark

What do you mean 'big' service Kev? there's no such thing AFAIK.

Does it say BIG F##KIN SERVICE on the OBC?

LOL...i've assumed it was going to be a "big" service...by big service, i mean costly....

I think its the 3rd "check" ... is it not common to have a "big" service at 60k miles???...people talk about cambelts/ timing belt etc...? for the n54 is it not a chain?....

Yes, it's a chain so nothing to worry about. At around 60K I would expect you should have a Vehicle check coming up as well and perhaps a pollen filter and the air filter if it has not been changed previously. These are hardly any big items, so short of both front and rear brakes being due you should be fine.

Kev,

The 'vehicle' check is just that, a quick checkover on the ramps, usually 1 hour labour at a dealer, but they'll do it in 10 minutes.

But of course, the idea is it will throw up any problems and could lead to other work.

My failing front damper and bent ARB drop link was spotted at the 'vehicle' check by my Indy.

I have just had a cost of a 'big' service, it's the 3rd service and needs the following:

Oil and oil filter change
microfilter change
air filter change
spark plugs change

one main dealer priced at £525 and another at £415 and will also give me half price MOT. Big variation for dealers within 10 miles of each other.

I know because of warranties etc not everyone can contemplate DIY servicing, but all those jobs are well within the scope of even a basic DIYer. I reckon £150 tops on parts. Makes 500 quid seem like daylight robbery!

Yeah the dealer did say they would knock £100 off if I supplied the oil, providing it's the right one they will do it. Think they said longlife 0w30.

Which oil did you get?

Cheers

Castrol Edge 5w30 from ECP. Works out at about £45 for 6.5 litres as opposed to the £120 that BMW charge! Easiest way you'll ever save £80!

Oh right, they said it had to be 0w30.
Also I think they said ll04 and I've looked at the castrol edge 0w30 from ecp and it says it's ll01 so not sure if I can get away with that.

I also had a look at main dealer discount and cheapest price was still £500+ with 15% discount.

5w30 is LL04 approved. You won't be able to use LL01 in your car as it is too new.

Castrol Edge LL04 5w30 is an approved oil for your car/engine.

Under the old regime (non CBS) you used to get a big service at 60k.

Oil (15k)
INSP 1 (30k)
Oil (45k)
INSP 2 (60k)

Under CBS the servicing is spread out more.
