Replace iDrive with aftermarket HU?

The CCC has died on my '06 325i with iDrive so rather than replace it, I'm considering installing an aftermarket HU with nav instead. (Never was crazy about the iDrive anyway and I don't mind having the display blank) Has anyone done this? I have read that I'd loose the audio chimes etc as well as the additional info that iDrive displays such as the trip computer but is there anything else that I'd loose? Will the car still tell me of warnings / service via the instrument cluster display? Thanks
