N54 Can't handle the heat!!
Is it just me or do all you guys feel the same about our cars in the heat!? It's been 100 degrees+ for the last two weeks. Yesterday it was 101 temp and the heat index was 106, I went for a 100 mile drive to road America for a cruise then a auto-x after and this car can't handle it, huge loss in power. Limp mode. Fans on the whole time, lots of noises. I get it was really really hot. But my buddy in his new evo didn't have any problem really. Even today my temp reads 102 on the dash and it's just running like crap in this weather.
I guess having a DCI doesn't help much but it just sucks. Looks like the next few weeks will be super hot. I'm in southern WISCONSIN of all places too lol. Is there anything further than a different intake that'll help me? Does it all sound normal for n54s? Hate that the damn evo was running like a champ lol

Do you have an oil cooler?
Whats your oil level? What tune? AT/MT? Low speed driving? high speed? And yes your engine has another cooling mechanism then that Evo.. but limping on a higway because of heat is a defect if you have an oil cooler... Check your codes and report them....

And your intake does not has anything to do with your engine temp.

Start considering Meth or an Oil Cooler Upgrade. While it sounds like it was hot as hell outside, high Oil Temp & Trans Temp (especially if you're AT) are probably what's triggering the Limp Mode.

I don't notice an issue with this heat other than worse gas mileage from running the AC.
Sure I can do a few pulls back to back ok. Anymore than that without some idle time and I feel the power loss. No oil cooler here either. I can hear/feel the fan running which is fine. Maybe try a small mix of e85. |

No tune right now. 6mt Oil temps were around 260°, usually it stays below 250 never saw it past that point before. 3 laps at road America. Was a cruise but I got on it in the corners sideways lol, ten minutes after I left went to a auto-x. Just a small one 5 guys a few vette buddies of mine do, beat on it the whole time. High engine speeds all day to be honest. Hit a half power/limp. I let the car cool down it was parked for a while 30 mins or so. Turned it back on and no CEL or limp. I haven't checked what codes are stored yet got home late worked early so I'll have to check later. Just thought maybe it was heat related.

I'm in Alabama and the past two weeks have been over 100F. One of the worst days it got up to 108F. I can tell a difference in power on how hot it is outside but the car still pulls hard and no over heating. Is your car an 07 w/o an oil cooler?
I solved my heating issues yesterday though...ordered a Helix intercooler and I have Vishnu DCI going on as well on top of that!

I don't even bother pushing my car hard or tracking it in this heat because it will only cause dissappointment and needless wear/tear. OP, no oil cooler + oil temps above ~260 is most likely what caused the limp mode. I'd definitely look into an aftermarket oil cooler if you're serious about tracking especially in this weather... the car will actually run slightly cooler as well when you throw a tune on, not sure why you would do bolt-ons before a tune, but get a tune ASAP! and then after all that and youre still not satisfied Meth is a great solution for summer heat! |

You NEED an oil cooler for tracking the car in the summer. Meth will definitely help with IAT suppression but isn't going to do a damn thing for oil temps.

Issues with my turbos for a little so I stayed off of it all. Turbo issue was resolved I was thinking of getting jb4 back in but I picked up a 08 M5 not to long ago and kinda really forgot about my need for speed lol... I never had a problem before but I do need a oil cooler, I plan on keeping this car for a while I have a special attachment to it lol.. But thanks for the advice

I don't know how hard you were driving, so I don't know whether the limp mode makes sense or indicates a problem. But yes, now that ATR is out and the maps are there for everybody to see, the ECU reduces performance a LOT in the heat. I've been testing in 100 degree temps for the last week or so with a DCI and the air temps are frequently in the 130s before you even start boosting. That's well into the zone where requested load and timing and boost are all being pulled lower. So it's a double whammy...not only do you make less power because the air isn't as dense, but then you make even less because the computer turns everything down. Definitely a recipe for slow. I can see why meth has been so popular because it's an easy way to make artificial winter inside your intake tract.

The evo is a beast on the track - we had a couple of X MR's with the SST trans at our company's 1.5 mile test track in the deep south of Texas the middle of summer. 100+ daily temps. They ran 8 hours a day 6 days a week for 4 weeks in a row for a huge customer event. NO engine/trans problems. Only things that would go were tires, brakes and an occasional wheel bearing.

I have been very reserved so far this summer. Phoenix is very hot. I keep the JB4 on max cool, did a coolant flush, and have my meth nozzles in both the intakes and the elbow start spraying at 8psi, with max boost of ~14psi. And I rarely go into boost too. I have the cowl out as well in hopes that that helps ventilate some of the scortching engine bay heat escape. If its above 100 I rarely even boost it, don't see a reason to inflict unnecessary stress due to 100+ every day from April to October :-/
