moving from stagger to square

I have an e90 with sport package. My car came with style 161 17x8 wheels in front and 17x8.5 wheels in back. According to what I have read the front wheels have an "ET 34" offset, while the rear ones have "ET 37". I would like to switch to a square setup and I was thinking of just putting some of the same 17x8 wheels on the rear so I can run 225/45R17 tires all around (instead of 255/40R17 in the rear as I have now). Will putting an ET 34 wheel on the rear of a ZSP car (instead of an ET37 one) cause a problem? If so how? I'd like to understand this before I make a decision on the way to go.

Im doing the same on my E92 XI. Im hoping the rears can fit the fronts without issues. If so I can start rotating tires again. Im tires of cars wearing tires faster because of the staggered setup.

No issues. It's been done many times before. The rear wheels just won't look as 'aggressive'.

Try 8.5 inch all around with 245/45/17 or 245/40/18.

I have 8.5 front and 9.5 rear, and you will always need some traction in the rear.

My wife's Mercedes E350 4Matic has 8.5x18 wheels all around wearing 245/40/18 Conti DWS. You will appreciate the tire size.

Hmm ok. I'd like to rotate tires, thats my main idea. Plus there are more tires available in 225/45R17 than in 255/40R17. I don't really want to go to 18s because I live in the midwest and our streets are absolute garbage.

The standard (non ZSP) e90 328i comes with 17x8 all around, which is why I asked. I just didn't know if they inset the rear hubs more on the ZSP cars to accommodate the stagger making them different than the regular e90 or not. It sounds like not?

You guys really think I'll miss the extra width in the back on a 325i? This thing doesn't put down much torque... hehe I guess I could look at 245/45R17 all around (like the non staggered 330 had). But then I'd be buying 4 wheels instead of 2.

I would wait till it's time to buy tires or sell the ones you have now and get a set of 245's. And do 8.5 all around.

I think these are great questions and there would be a modest reduction (2-3 lbs) in weight with a smaller tire.. I wonder about how important the width in the back is, as well. If I'm not setting off the DSC all the time, do I really need the extra inch in the back? Am I losing braking from narrower tread?

You lose braking performance more from a subpar tire compound than a reduction in tire width, however you will notice an increase in lateral grip with the wider tires as long as you choose an adequate tire.

bingo, but you can always use a spacer in the rear to gain some of the lost offset.
