Problem is insurers are going to start taking note too!! BMW need to do something quickly to rectify this.

Wouldn't it be an idea to just make a switch between one or more wires of the OBD port ?

Thieves wouldn't notice it until their method doesn't work after several attempts...

Just an idea...

This has all been discussed\suggested countless times in threads on here and on PH. Yes it's a good idea but I object to the fact the owners should have to jury rig\mess around with switches, moving the ODB port, diskloks and the hundreds of other options which have already been suggested.

This should be down to BMW to rectifiy what is a very basic and unforgiveable lapse in the security system of their "premium cars".

It's a joke really, BMW would have to spend millions to re-call every car with this problem (if they can actually come up with a good way to fix this in the first place) so what's the chances of our cars actually being rectified? future models will have something in place i'd imagine however.

Already have. The F series don't have a key-fob slot so a blank key cannot be programmed in the car anyway.

there was also a write up last week in the metro about this. They were saying that they cracked a huge ring of these thieves and also managed to nab the leader with details of 172 cars at his home!!!

They weren't smashing the windows though. They'd stand around with a signal jammer to prevent you from locking the car with the key fob. Unsuspecting people just press the button and walk away without checking if it was locked. They'd then go into the car and programme the key and put a gps transmitter on / in the car somewhere to track its movements allowing them to go steal it with their cloned key when it suits them. They then found similar cars from another eurpoean country (can't remember which one) cloned the documents and then sold the car over here as if it came from that country. (and yes I am thinking but those cars would be left hand drive??)

These people are so good that they can convert RHD to LHD.

Even the new "Spider-man" movie is making a mockery of the BMW security system-not sure if it was a bit far fetched but certainly looks easy to steal a 7-Series

For real BMW don't give s... . If your car will be stolen. They know you gona buy another bemmer and you gona make them happy.
They stealing BMW because sales is up. More people want BMW. If VAG car gona get more popular than that will gona start stealing more them cars. For professionals no diferent what car to nick it. Because then them need to sell that car. It's a business for every one.
