These are my winter tires and are used for the winter. Why would you even think of running them in the summer?

You didnt answer my question -- the reason is because I got a good deal on a set of wheels with these tires.

I would not run them in the summer. You'll chew right through them.

Winter tires are specifically designed to be used in lower temperatures. From my experience and customer feedback in summer temps these will handle very poorly, wear out quickly and have much reduced levels of grip.

If you got a great deal on the wheels, that isn't a problem. Simply dismount the winter tires and resell them or use them yourself in winter time.

Gary -- what's your recommendation for a set of tires? They are style 270 BMW wheels.

Current size on tires is 235/40/18 square setup.

I ran Blizzak LM 22's (similar performance winter tire) one summer just cuz I wanted to run 'em down. They handled fine at 99 mph. Run 'em if your goal is just to run the tread down; if not, save 'em for the winter.

Would this be for a summer tire? An all season tire? Anything more you can tell me about your driving style and conditions that would help me give you a more accurate recommendation?

Gary --

May be a bit off topic, but what about the M+S type tires that the off-road truck crowd uses? They run these year round, on pavement and off, and often in desert heat conditions. Are they different compounds from passenger car winter tires? Always wondered about this.

Hi Gary- maybe you can recommend one summer and one all season. It's my wifes car. If I can get a good deal on all seasons - I might ditch the alpins.

Absolutely different tires! Off road Mud Terrain type tires don't have rubber compounds that are designed specifically for sub freezing temps, instead they use more of an all-season rubber compound.

Bang for the buck all season tires would be the ECSTA 4X which recently won a comparo test against other value oriented UHP all season tires. The test is here : http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...&affiliate=AH8

For summer tires at lower price points, I like the Sumitomo HTRZ3 and Hankook Ventus V12 EVO.

I have them on my car, 235 4 corners. When outside temp reach 60F, it is highly possible to get in an accident with them...

That's a fairly low offset so I would stick with 225/40R18. Maybe 235/40R18 if you're feeling lucky.
