Please forgive the ignorance of the non-mechanically inclined, what is the purpose and advantage of this?

It looks a bit out of place? The brush aluminum does not go well with the black engine compartment.
I don't think it makes much mechanical improvement from our factory strut bars, unless someone compares the two side by side.

Look at the factory BMW strut tower braces, they hold the bar to the strut tower interface plates via two bolts- otherwise latteral loads running along the horizontal axis of the car, front to back, allows the towers to wiggle... if that made any sense. |
