Golf T mod

Can someone remind exactly what this is please. What it does and how it works? And how to do?

I remember reading something about it many months ago before I bought the car but my laptop is fooked and can't search for threads on iPad.

Basically it's removing a vacuum hose that attaches to the flap in the left hand tailpipe. Remove the hose, stuck a golf tee in it and secure and tie it off somewhere safe. Gives you a little bit more volume when cruising around at low rpms and doing it this way doesn't throw up any codes. If you have a JB4 you can do it via the steering wheel without messing about under the car but it's a really quick and easy mod if that's your thing. There is a way of doing it via the left taillight hatch where you unplug a connector but that will throw a code.

So pull the hose off, put a golf T in the hose and tie it out of the way? And that's it.

So leave the hole in the exhaust open?

May as well try it for free and see what difference it makes

Sorry, yes you should cover up the nipple on the exhaust actuator to prevent dirt/water getting in. But basically that's it. I just fitted the BMW perf exhaust, car sounds like it should now

Don't even need to bother with a golf tee. Just fold the pipe double and tie off.

You would expect a 325i to have a nice exhaust note but mine seems really quiet compared to my previous car. (R32)

It's also a lot louder when cruising at motorway speeds though. I tried it by pulling the plug because the flap was clanging on cold start. Flap was still quite loud and it droned on teh motorway so I just replaced the plug.

dont tghink this mod applies to e90+ 325i models....330 onwards i believe.

If this mod hasnt been done when should the 2nd pipe be open?

Just wondering as when i switch the car on the 2nd pipe is open. Is it only closed when driving and then opens when you hit the loud peddle?

It is open when not running of course, then on COLD start it will close immediately and stay closed for about 30 seconds or so to keep it quiet on fast idle, then it opens.

Then as you pull away it closes and stays closed at light throttle all the time. Not super light granny throttle, but just general driving.

But even on a light throttle it will still open at about 3.5krpm-ish.

It can be boomy cruising, model dependant, but give it a try no harm done.

You can just remove the connector in the boot, this is the easiest way.

Nothing on the dashboard. You do get a code with a code reader, something like "Fume Flap open".
As long as you plug it back in before a service then there will be no problems, I think they will just clear the code, which has happened for me before.

Since fitting the performance exhaust, I don't bother unplugging it anymore as it's just a bit too loud on cold start.

Agree, but even if you left it uplugged, the worst they would do (if they could even be bothered) is plug it back in again for you.

The hidden code is inconsequential, and in my mind its easier to unplug it quickly (and while standing up) in a dry luggage compartment than scrabble around on the floor under a filthy wet car messing with the exhaust.

But that's even more reason to just unplug the electrical plug in the boot. Then you could just say "eh, what plug?, must have fell undone, nothing to do with me."

I checked mine last night and on cold start the second pipe doesnt close at all. I've not done the mod but did notice the second pipe is slighty loose. Also after a drive i checked and the pipe was wide open. Broken?

paarp,

Sorry I didn't spot that you have a 330i, my comments were about the 335i, they're not the same exhaust system and the flap works in different way.

IIRC my 06 E90 330i flap didn't close on cold start either.

I have noticed in the past following E46 330i's that the flap shuts when they pull away, so you'll never see it your self.
