Common 335 Faults
I realised this has been asked a million times before but is there one thread with specific details about all the common faults on the 335i?
I'm aware of the major ones (although I'm not sure if they only affect the earlier models) about waste gates and then turbo's going pop or oil coolers (I think this is a specific diesel issue rather than petrol) Is there anything I need to worry about or check when I go to view the car? Thanks for the help Please don't flame me for not using the search function if I've missed a glaring answer

Wheels are prone to cracking although this isn't exclusive to the 335i and will be difficult to find with getting the car up. Can hear waste gate rattle if you rev the car a little (take a look on YouTube). Also fuel pump too, difficult to diagnose I think apart from if car turns over a while before it fires up i believe.

The fuel pump failures are more common in countries where poor fuel is used. The 335i really does like v power.
The actuators can be an issue. I've not heard anyone who has the updated actuators having any further problems. Injectors were a known problem. BMW did a recall last year for cars with potentially sub standard injectors and this seems to be a success too. It is a lot of car for the money. What are you looking for? |

I've heard about the HPFP failure before, didn't realise it was partly attributed to poor fuel. Luckily I've run all my previous cars on V-power (Civic Type R, 600bhp R32 GTR and DC5 Integra Type R).
I'm looking at/paid deposit on a 58 plate 335i M Sport Coupe with 24k miles on, the only worrying thing is that it has been a press preparation car (so either given to journalists or used in photos). The only other glaringly obvious problem is the ability to steal them in less than 3 minutes but lets not discuss this minor shortcoming shall we...

The main thing to look out for is "waste gate rattle", on initial start up the N54 engine makes all kinds of weird noises, but as soon it settles back to idle it should sound smooth (theres always a slight "ticking" noise present from the engine bay but thats normal). Rev it to 4-5Krpm and than let the engine settle back to idle and listen out for a "mechanical rattle" as the revs fall....if the noise is there the wastegate might need replacement which I gather is hard job. Apart from that theres not much else, as already mentioned the fuel pump problems seems to have mainly affected the people over the pond. BMW did a injector recall some time last year, give BMW a call and they can tell you if the car needs anymore work.... Don't forget to put up some photos once you sign on the dotted line |

HPFP, Injectors, Coil packs, wastegate actuator, turbos, wheels, solenoid valves are the main ones....
I love the DC5!....you'll definitely have more torque! and mods will give you better gains than any gruppe m, kpro, toda manifold, rbc intake, spoon throttle body on a DC5! Just with a remap...your looking at +60/80bhp... bolt on mods and your over 100bhp gains... |

check the whole history of the car!....what warranty works have been done...
if they say none!...then i'll be more worried....and make sure you get a BMW warranty for the first 2 years i would say.... a test drive will not be enough to know if your injectors/ hpfp are fcuked... my engine warning light used to come on after 1 hour of driving.... |

and, btw....its a gorgeous looking car with wondeful power delivery.....from 2k rpm you will feel the torque kick....and its also high revving.... ;-) ....not as much as a dc5....where the power is in the vtect range....but still....7k rpm....
mid range power is very very good with a remap!....on a straight, the 335i is a boxter, cayman killer... |

Thanks for all the advice about things to check for!
I'm buying the car from BMW so I'll get a 1yr warranty with it anyway, will enquire about how much it is to extend it! Has anyone used the tyre insurance they offer? I've already started investigating remaps - I don't tend to keep cars standard, lol

mine had all the usual probs within the first 6 months of me having it, all sorted under the extended warranty, I've had £3 years of trouble free motoring since. I really struggle to find what I'd like to replace it with so she's a keeper for me. You'll love it, brisk effortless motoring. I still love mine after some years, its just a shame some tossers have given it some car park war wounds :-(

Bad news about the car park wounds, there are some right expletives out there!
Looks like I'll be trying to adopt the break everything in the first year style of driving with it to make sure I make the most of the warranty!

That's the one I've been looking at, was having a browse on the US site last night.
Guessing there is a UK distributor for them somewhere on here?

Wow, just browsing on his website - tuning an N54 with the basics is cheap!
Just to put it in to comparison I sold my air intake for my DC5 for £500! If I wanted a remap I'd need K-pro which is £600 second hand and then an actual map for it!

I initially had no intention of doing any power mods on my 335i, having come from a 350Z where £1k = 20bhp max. So when I found out how easy the N54 engine was to mod I couldn't resist If your car is coming with a BMW warranty its probably worth keeping it standard till the warranty runs out...also gives you time to save up for all the mods. Not sure if I'm hijacking, but I've been getting quite a few Engine Fault! Reduced Power on my 335i, whilst cruising, accelerating, very random scenarios. Turn off and restart and problem goes away again.

Forget the tyre insurance, especially if its from a company called auto protect...

Ah so not so serious compared to the fuel pump issue?
Sorry one for question, wrong thread or forum probably. Window sometimes goes half way down when opening doors instead of little gap and is the driver seatbelt suppose to come out even though I'm not sat in the seat? Thought it had sensors?
