my first long trip in the 325i (good mpg)

Well just back from my first long trip with the E90.

Edinburgh - Harrogate (a few day trips) - Edinburgh

1 tank of fuel
485 miles
38.7mpg average over the whole trip.

Thats with some motorway, some 40mph A1 nonsense, and a bit of town driving. Also had the air con on most of the time.

Well happy with those figures

That's very impressive figures.. good going and who'd have know 325i's which sound pretty decent under the foot, to have returned such good results!

I just done a London to Manchester run in my 325i and got 37+ mpg at average showing of 68 mph.

Was also doing some foot down overtaking so happy with that!

yeah.. having come from an auto 330i e46 to a manual 328i e46 and then to this, i'm amazed at the economy available from these new engines. Given its almost as quick as my 330i auto was, sounds just as juicy, and seems to just "sip" the fuel.

also happy to report that after 1400 miles of ownership, the oil has only gone down by one notch on the display. So its not thirsty for the expensive stuff either!

I was very impressed with my 325 last month on a trip to cornwall. Was getting around 40 mpg and worked out it cost me £35 for the 350 mile trip there. Compared to my 2.0 tdci focus I did it in last year it only cost me an extra £5 so was very impressed with that!

Sounds good.

Ford Focus economy in a 6 cylinder BMW.

What's the point of buying a boring Focus?

well indeed... we had a 2.0 focus in my last job. It absolutely drank fuel when you drove it hard, and wasnt all that economical when you drove it gently. 30-32mpg average was doable with care. I can get that in my 325 easily. yet my 325 is actually more economical when i thrash it, and a heck of a lot faster than a 2.0 focus zetec!

They are decent on long runs, it's in town the numbers drop to silly levels I find, but that depends on what town you live in I guess.

i generally don't do a lot of town driving these days. Its mostly a weekend car the 325i. But when i do go into town, i'm still generally able to keep it above 25mpg. Which is fine for me. The reality is that many cars (even a 1.6 focus) don't do MUCH better in stop start traffic. My old golf 1.6 would only manage about 28mpg in town.

That is only because it's already averaged a high reading.

To get 28 around town (reset) you must drive like a complete granny.

not really... just manual transmission, good running engine, and not driving like a fanny in town

anyway, i said "generally able to keep it over 25", not sure where you got 28 from

Well done on those amazing figures. But that's mega gentle driving, impressive never the less.

Do you ever give her any stick? I drove a 325i last year and was pleasantly surprised with its performance

I second that.
I have 2 liter petrol and that gives max 400 miles out of tank on motorway.
Defo OP is missing something, unless his tank is 100 liters.
OP, can you check with brim to brim method and confirm what sort of MPG do you get.
MPG counter on cars are usually optimistic.

Fuelly.com gives you best way of calculating it.

It won't be a 100litre tank.

My M3 has a 63litre tank.

I get an average of 35MPG on the motorway in my 335i at motorway speeds. Dropping back a little I could get more.

I can get over 400 miles from a tank.

Maybe a case of the 2 litre engine working a bit harder at motorway speeds?

I'm usually £73-75 to fill the tank. That works out at 55 litres at v power prices.

Do all the e9x range have the same fuel tank size?

makkan00 fully topped back up (took 58 litres) and calculated on a UK website, total came out at 37.62mpg... so only a tiny bit less than the car is indicating. I reset my mile counter when i fuelled up for the journey, and there was still an indicated range of 15 miles on it when it reached 480 miles total elapsed distance. I think some of you guys must just give it a lot of hoof on the motorway

Also remember that the 2.0 does work a bit harder than the bigger engine does to pull the car around. It'll likely be burning more fuel to maintain its pace than a slightly larger engine would. I'd imagine gearing would also be slightly different as a result of the lower powered engine.

Theres also the fact that this was / is a very very well looked after car, both engine and vehicle are almost as new. It doesn't use oil (at least not by BMW standards) and is as smooth as a dime.

DXB335D... I give her stick all the time In fact part of that long journey was hooning it along A roads, overtaking a great many tractors

I was trying to be careful on this one though, as I wanted to see what the most the car could do was. Its hard to get an idea of a cars potential when all I want to do is take her onto an A roads and beat the hell out of her hehe.

But as you say, the performance can be surprising, but you really have to wring the 325i right up to 6000rpm to get the power and performance. In fact my only complaint with this engine is that its SO smooth up to its red line, that i have on occasion hit the limiter. With a lot of cars (even our old 328i) there was a sense of the power dropping off just before the red line. But the 325 just seems so linear right up to the top. Feels like it could use another 1000rpm

I wont lie, its not as gutsy as my 330i was, but it's definitely not bad. I think i'll be after an F10 535D next time though.

EDIT: and if it helps understand the figures. This was a full tank of V-Power. I only ever put Super Unleaded into the car.
