Anyone have experience with online classes?

Hey guys,

I went to school until about 20 years old and finished half my GE classes and dropped out to persue a career in real estate. Cant complain it was a great decision. However time has come where I would love to persue my school degree just to have it. I have heard of online classes and would like to take this approach. Have anyone gotten a BA this way? I keep hearing about Phoenix University. I have tried to ask friends however none of them took classes online. Help would be appreciated

The major pitfall with online classes is simply motivation. Will you be motivated to get up, do the work inside of your bedroom or office, and then still study hard for exams all in the comfort of your own home? If so, then I see no problem with online education.

Additionally, you should research opinions on the quality of the online program you plan to enroll in.

Taken plenty of classes online. If you really want to learn, dont take online classes. If you want to get your degree just for satisfaction, take classes online.

The vast majority of online schools you see advertise (Kaplan, Everest, Phoenix, etc.) I would never, ever, think about going to. Just my opinion. They tend to be just as expensive as a major University, the quality of the education is suspect (especially at ones like Kaplan), and if you ever intend to actually use the degree for something it won't carry much weight. Look up some articles about the for-profit education industry and you'll see there are lots of negatives about it with few positives. There might be some people who have gotten a degree from those places and done well, but that tends to be the exception. Not to mention if you ever decide to get a Master's or transfer to a reputable University the Phoenix/Kaplan/etc. credits almost certainly won't transfer due to the difference in academics.

There are plenty of reputable school that offer online programs. Nearly every major University in the country should have some type of online program, though these tend to be Master's degrees, I'm sure a few B.S. degrees are available out there. If I were you I would look into doing online/in-person classes at a local college to finish your degree. It will most likely be cheaper than going to an online for-profit place and better for you in the long run.

I did most of my G.E credits online, when I was in the military. They were pretty easy and you can use the book for the tests. But the classes for my actual major, I am not taking them online.

p.s. Don't go to Phoenix, Kaplan, Keiser or any daytime television commercial school.

This is what I was going to say. In addition to it the teachers that usually 'teach' the online classes can be hard to get a response out of. All of them do teach actual classes and seem to put online classes at the bottom of their priorities.

You have to be careful as you're usually paying the same amount as you would to learn in a classroom environment where as in an online course you're both the student and teacher.

I've never taken an online course myself but this is what I gathered from multiple friends wanting to or have taken an online class.

I agree about motivation. I took one online course in my undergraduate and I told myself I would never do it again. My main issue was that I could not truly apply the concepts from the readings into answering the questions. Having the ability to learn in person from a teacher the old fashion way was just easier for me. But, there is no reason why you could not do well in an online program.

I got my Master's in Systems Engineering from SMU 100% online distance education. It was super flexible for working full-time, and at the end of the day, you have the same M.S. degree as someone taking classes on campus.

There are a lot of online Master's programs offered by reputable universities. Not so much for undergrad.

Honestly? Right now I would not hire any one who had an education from an online class.
I'm sorry there are way too many qualified folks who have an education from real univesities that are looking for jobs right now that I could hire from.

This is a really touchy subject for a lot of people. Personally, I can tell you that in every company I have worked for, the second someone spots a "for-profit" online school in your resume, that resume goes straight to the trash. Why? Like Shah mentioned, there is just too many qualified people out there and the learning experience at for-profit universities is not even close to that of an actual university.

Now, I am not picking on just any online school, I am only talking about for-profit colleges (University of Phoenix, DeVry, ITT Tech, etc), not reputable colleges that happen to offer online courses. If its difficult for you to find the time, then I would suggest doing night classes like someone mentioned.

As has been said already, if you don't ever see yourself needing the degree and just want it for you, the online for-profit schools will be fine, though they are just as expensive as a regular university.

If you see yourself trying to go somewhere with the degree that you are trying to get, take the time to do it the "right" way and go through a more reputable college in your area. There are now more and more that are offering the night classes in conjunction with online classwork for people in the working world. This gives you the pedigree of a more reputable school as well as the degree you have been looking for.

In the end, they will probably cost you about the same amount of money anyway.

Right, and you shouldn't. I have a B.S. from PSU and a M.S. from SMU. On paper, I attended 2 national universities (with the 2 worst football scandals in college sports history), but I've never stepped foot on SMU's campus.

QFT. I've only taken a maximum of 2 classes (maybe just 1) and I swear it's the easiest class(es) that I've ever taken. All the answers were pretty much given to you. If you really want to learn and hear other people's perspective (which is a plus IMO) then you should go to class. Online classes are just so you can say that you've taken those classes. It does take a lot of dedication though because no one is there to keep you up to date.

It also depends on the Major and curriculum. Just because an Engineering class is online doesn't mean it's going to be easy.

1) Are you a man?
2) Are you straight?
3) Do you like hot young women?
If you answered yes to all three find your local community college and make time to go!
Not only will you get a REAL education, meet amazing people who will help you in your career and hook up with lots of cute young hot tight women.....it will give you a chance to get out of the house to clear your mind and to totally focus on what you are working on.

And odds are it's about the same price!
TRUST ME it's worth it! I took 2 years of CC before I went off to university. Saved myself lots of money and made friends for life!
