Help with Wheel spacers and tyre size

I am thinking of getting spacers on my car and on the next tyre change going up form 255 to 265 and wont to know if I will get any rubbing.

My car is as per my signature so 19" wheels on the 335d Coupe with the M Sport suspension.

Will I be able to use 12mm spacers all round and go to 265/30 on the rear and the same 10mm tyre width increase on the front without rubbing ?

Why go up to 265?

10mm spacer plus 1/2 of 10mm tyre width increase means your tyre will be 15mm closer to the arch...

Is your coupe a facelift model? I'm not sure if they widened the coupe track at facelift like they did with the saloon and tourer where they added 12mm per side front and rear.

Ian (hotcoupe) will be along soon to impart his knowledge about spacers / rims widths etc......

I wanted wider tyres to help reduce "wheel spin" in 1st and 2nd - yup it is the facelift model

Garage List
Fronts
235/35/19 with 10mm spacer, gives you an offset of ET27 (based on OEM offset of ET37 on MSport 225 wheels)

Rears
265/30/19 with 10mm spacer, gives you an offset of ET29 (based on OEM offset of ET39 on MSport 225 wheels)

12mm spacers (ET27) on the rear would rub if you had back seat passengers,on undulating/rough roadsurfaces/speedbumps etc.

Upsizing one tyre size all round with equal size spacers retains the staggered OEM wheel/tyre specs, which maintains the overall balance in both driving characteristics and aesthetics of the car.

The LCI E92 has the same track width as the pre LCI E92

Depending on what tyres you currently run another way could be a better tyre, one with more grip. Remember wider doesn't mean better grip in itself, often a wider tyre is a softer rubber compound (with faster wear) to get the same grip as a less wide section. Then there is the other side of grip, get a damp or wet road and you could be way down on grip with the wider section, compared to a more suitable tyre in the OEM size.

Very useful post Hot, thanks. Not quite sure what the 'staggered' look means. Obviously I know the front and rear wheels and tyres are different sizes, but does this create a 'look'?

I wanted both front and rear wheels to fill the arches and be 'flush' with the body. I achieved this by 10mm front and 15mm rear spacers (wheel and tyre sizes are OEM). See pic below.

Are you saying I have somehow upset the handling balance by doing so?

So, if I went up 1 tyre width size would I only be able to use 5mm spacers without rubbing ? I wanted "Hubcentric" spacers and believe they are not available below 12mm. Is this an issue ?

Phil,I noticed you're running 18" MV3's, so in your case my post does not apply in terms of wheels spacers and widths, with 18" wheels you can get away with wider spacers than 19" wheels.
Without knowing what the offsets of your wheels are,nor your tyre sizes, (I believe both non staggered and staggered are available in 18",could be wrong though)it's difficult to answer your questions.

No,going up a tyre size allows you to use 10mm spacers.

H&R do 10mm hubcentric spacers (I have a pair),as do Eibach.

Technically yes, by widening the rear track more than the front you will dull the steering response and create a more understeery characteristic.

The 'track' width is measured between tyre centres, not the outside edge, so for example, fitting wider tyres with no spacers will not change the track width, but adding spacers or changing offsets will.

I went the opposite way to you, by accident, on my winters I fit 18x8J ET35 MV3 reps all round with 225/40/18 tyres which narrows the rear track and tyre width, leaving the front unchanged.

I fitted 10mm spacers all round to to help push out the narrower rears, but as i'd then widended the front track whilst simultaneously narrowing the rear tyre width and track, this change the handling dramatically into a very twitch oversteery nature.

The rear would pendulum when changing lanes on the motorway, needless to say I took the 10mm spacers off the front and all was back to normal!

I have done 12mm all round (Eibach Hubcentric) and really pleased with the look and can feel slightly less body roll on fast corners too

Have you gone up a size on the tyres with these spacers fitted?

I.e. 235 front and 265 rear?
