Need Help: DEAD E92
So I just recently getback to states from overseas, while I left my 2008 E92 sits at garage properly, but I forget to unplug the battery before I left.
So basically, the car was asleep for 3 months. Now the car is all dead. Do you know what should I do ? Would Jump Start be a good idea ? Or is there anyway I could recharge the battery ? Or do I need a battery replacement ? and did anyone know how much does it cost ? Really Appreciating for any Response. Thanks. |

Try jump starting it first. Read the manual and use the jump points under the hood. Do not directly jump the battery. There are electronics tied to each post: the + side has the BST (Battery Safety Terminal); it's the red box on top of the battery, and the - side has the IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor), both of which can be easily electrically damaged and are EXPENSIVE to replace.
I suspect that after just 3 months the battery has discharged, but not yet sulfated and killed a cell(s). Jump start the car, if it starts the battery is probably still good. Once the car is running do not turn it back off and then drive the car for a few hours at highway speeds to fully recharge the battery. Or... you could buy a battery maintainer unit such as a Battery Tender (brand name of the unit from Deltran), connect it to the battery and let the unit bring the battery back to life slowly. I use products from a company called Granite Digital (google “save a battery” - you'll find them) as I think their products are better than the Deltran unit. I think the Battery Tender has gone downhill in quality since manufacture of them was switched from Florida USA to China. The Granite Digital units are specifically designed to bring a dead battery back to life. Next time you leave the car sitting for an extended period, connect the battery maintainer unit before you leave (you’ll need access to 120V AC power i.e. a household plug). The battery maintainer is designed to maintain the battery at a proper charge level and “exercise” the battery to keep it fresh. Just to make it clear, battery maintainers are not the same as a “trickle charger”, or a standard battery charger found at a repair shop. If neither of these methods work, get a new battery installed. Search the Forum on "battery replacement" to understand what is involved (it's more complicated than you think - there is a DIY on the procedure you can read up on it). If you can't do such work yourself, have the car towed to a independent BMW repair shop and have them replace the battery and properly register it. Do not call a towing company to come out and install the new battery as they will probably do it wrong and damage something. There is no need to take it to a dealer for just a battery replacement, but only take the car to a shop that works on BMWs; anyone else will screw it up. Finally, search the Forum on extended storage and read up on the proper method to store a car for an extended period of time, which includes using gas stabilizer and other practices to keep the car from degrading while in storage.
