I freaked out first time this happened, I thought my display went dead. This was the first question I had about the car when I joined the forum, luckily I found the answer after a little searching...

You have polarized glasses... but you should be able to see the display if you tilt your glasses or head a little

One would think that BMW engineers would have selected a face plate that would be visible with polarized sunglasses. Seems kind of rediculous that they blew that one !!

It depends on the angle of polarisation of the lenses. My old Maui Jim glasses w/ glass lenses unabled me to se the radio display; however, my new Maui Jim's with synthetic lenses allow me to see it just fine...

My Revos completely black out the screen. An absolutely inexcusable oversight by BMW.

Can't stand polarized glasses. Got them last time by accident and almost killed myself staring at the wierd shapes in the glass instead of looking out the windshield.

Are you guys talking about the I-drive screen? I have no problems looking at it with my polarized Revo's on.

This is perhaps a little off-topic, but I have the same problem, and my solution was going to be to change the glasses (which need changing anyways). Is there a good technical reason for having polarized glasses in first place? (i.e. something like "without this the sun will burn your retinas")

You get better glare reduction with polarized lenses, since (iirc) sunlight reflecting off of flat surfaces tends to be polarized. (your lenses are polarized perpendicular to the reflections, reducing them more than ambient light).
Photographers often use polarizing filters when shooting outdoors for the same reason. |

WHATEVER THE TECHNICAL REASON IT IS IMMATERIAL -- A GROUP OF ENGINEERS SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THIS WRONG ---- AND IF THEY DID IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CORRECTED SOMETIME IN THE LAST 5 (yes FIVE) YEARS) AS ALL BMW"S OVER THESE YEARS HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE !!
