just be careful, CPO is over rated....PPI is the way to go.

The way it works; if you are interested in purchasing a car you can take it for an independent inspection. Ask the seller if it's ok, if they say no, walk away. I've had one dealer drive the car themselves to my INDY shop. Your INDY will have a standard check list if they offer PPI's and will charge around $100-$150, sometimes less. You can also have them inspect certain areas of concern a bit closer than normal. The INDY will give you a green light, flat out say NO with reason(s), or say yes but you need to fix the following immediately. You can then negotiate with the seller based on what needs to be fixed.
Well, that is my experience and I always buy used cars.

CPO is overrated? Geez, I hope not TOO overrated..! I'm in Ontario and just bought a CPO car in Newfoundland! I'm flying out next week to pick it up and drive it home. Yes, that is about 3,100km. I'm calling it the Honeymoon. I test drove several similar vehicles nearby to ensure the planned purchase would have the "feel" I wanted, but this will be (finally) my first BMW (2008 328xi E91 AT) since I started drooling over the 633 CSi in the 80's. Coincidentally this is also my first post to these forums.
Thanks for some great contributions throughout, especially in the DIY section. I've been reading posts for hours, since yesterday. Thank you to all the contributors. -Eric |

I'm an extremely happy "CPO" customer. I had very specific vehicle criteria and the BMW CPO program offered up an E92 that I'm still loving 4 years later.
One thing I like to keep pointing out is that while we can debate the pros and cons of CPO here, the public/market puts a value on it we can't discount. I like to buy cars that are ~2 years old (let someone else take the huge initial depreciation hit, enjoy some remaining factory bumper-to-bumper warranty). Remember that CPO transfers to future owners no matter how many times the car is sold. So if I want to sell my 3-4 year old car in the private market and it may be getting close to the end of the factory warranty, I can use the CPO certification/warranty as a selling chip. I wouldn't buy a modern used BMW that wasn't CPO and I know many others feel the same. You 335 guys want to have your cake and eat it too... if BMW is able to game title branding on lemon buybacks as alleged (for HPFP and related issues which you insist are not a long-term concern) how on earth is a private party inspection going to help you get to the bottom of a car history? A 335 may test perfectly fine today but throw a $5000 fit in a few weeks. Who's going to chip in for those repairs, PPI or CPO? my 2c

It doesn't have to be one or the other. You can get a pre-purchase inspection performed on a CPO car.
I personally love the warranty that comes with the CPO. Along with the desirability should I choose to re-sell within the CPO warranty period. |

A better thing would be to ask for the maintenance history of the car. My car had one fuel pump failure and headlight adjustment. The front suspension bushing were also changed prior to it being sold.
Since buying with 50K, I've put 24k on it, had a water pump, 3 injectors, and AC condensor fail. at least $3k worth of repairs, paid $150. |

I just picked up a CPO 2010 E90 335i M-Sport...Super happy with the car so far. I opted for the 3.9% BMWFS loan with the three month $1500 credit, so I wont be making a payment until March but my principle will be paid. I was able to negotiate down to almost private party value on the car too.

CPO warranty has been a joke for me.. 5 months of owning car car
-strut plates went bad.. Covered? nope had to pay $$$$$$ -Pixels on stereo are faded so bad I can barely see the display.. covered? Nope (dealing with it). - Xenon Lights were horribly adjusted when I bought the car..to have them adjusted wasn't covered so I just adjusted them myself (easiest fix ever). but had I not known how to adjust them (thank you e90 post) it would have been like $300 to have the dealership twist a knob a few times. -Tons of wind noise coming through the frame-less windows on my e92.. covered? nope! Fixed it myself (sort of).. -Bluetooth intermittently stops working.. Covered? Nope! - one of the TPMS went bad 2 months after I bought the car, covered? Nope! Luckily it was a cheap fix. I love my 3 series, but I don't think I would pay a premium for BMW's version of CPO... |

^^ Is this all at the same dealership?? If so, you may want to try another dealer...
For example, I am CPO until 7/2013 and my dealership (in PA) has adjusted my headlights 3 different times; absolutely free

I did PPI before purchasing a 2011 CPO. They caught the front bumper and a wheel were re-painted, but no damages. Dealer wouldn't tell me those things up front. I ended up buying it because otherwise the car was good. Good to know those things before I buy it, rather than finding out that later. warranty till 2008 - that's a peace of mind.

I'm looking to buy a used E90 and thought I'd go for a CPO from a dealership but after seeing this one I'm not too sure anymore. How can this dealer sell this car as a CPO? I have no idea
I thought they were pretty strict and went over the cars in detail before certifying them? The only good thing for me about a CPO is the extended warranty but you end up paying about 2k extra for a CPO car anyway. I think I will look for one on sale privately which has full history and documentation then have a PPI done before buying it. If I really want the warranty then I will pay $2k out of pocket and get it for the peace of mind. It just makes me wonder how many cars are out there with a clean Carfax but a whole lot of hidden history being sold as CPO. |
