ACT Street clutch, ClutchMasters LW FW, UUC Trans Mounts

I purchased all this from AR. It all came, very quickly I might add, and nothing was missing. I purchased the clutch kit so it came with the TO bearing, new clutch fork, new pivoting pin, bellhousing bolts, and a couple other things I cannot remember.

The install was straight forward. I'm sure there is already a DIY so I will spare any info on the install.

RESULTS:

Clutch finally holds! My stock clutch, with 105,000 miles on it, still had over 50% material left! But I could tell it was starting to slip on the top of 3rd, ever since I put in my downpipes. But the fw did not have any serious heat signatures and the clutch was in great shape, good enough shape to put back into a car honestly.

The trans mounts definitely made a difference. I always have complained of the poor 1-2 fast shift. Sometimes it just would refuse to go into 2nd, and I think it was because of the trans torquing one way or the other and messing up the linkage, just for long enough to keep me out of the gear. Well now my 1-2 is smooth as butter, even when dumping it in 1st and no-lift shifting into 2nd. Spinning 2nd all the way through is so much fun, I can finally do it again with my new clutch and bushings!

Thanks AR, UUC, ACT and ClutchMasters for the great support and products!

Nice. I might look into those trans mounts. 2nd gear is a pain in ass.

How is your clutch engagement point? When I went from stock to ACT, the engagement point moved very, very close to the floor. It increased my misshifts 10 fold (I rarely missed on the stock clutch and could shift well under 0.3 s - 100s of dragstrip passes).

the ACT starts super close to the floor, and then wears perfectly to release in the most optimal point. I would never want a stock clutch again! Releases way too high.

I love high release. It lets me barely put in the clutch before shifting. This new clutch's engagement is still really high. We did everything we could to keep from changing up the engagement because I like the way the stocker felt and didn't want to change. I even greased the input shaft where the TO bearing went, and all the gear linkage. Shifting feels incredible now.

Oh and instead of barely chirping 3rd I can almost spin it even in the dry now. It engages so hard, I love it!

This is really the first thread i've seen where someone combined clutch, FW from different manufactures. Is this the same FW CM uses in there complete kits? I think Spec has 2 different part #s for FWs.

How did you make sure engagement was near the top? Could it be the dimensions of the FW?

What about drivetrain chatter, noise with the combo? From a stop?

How much noise, vibration, harshness do the UUC trans mounts add?

I forgot about the trans mounts. Is this one of those "might as well do it" mods?

RE: UUC Mounts.
Some posters here have said they introduce NVH. I had them in my 97 540i with no increase in NVH. I guess they helped on my 540i, but I really couldn't tell a huge difference. I'd do em instead of OEMs when yours wear out / break.

Can we get some more info on how you managed to keep the engagement high with an ACT?

To confirm what every other poster has said of them, my ACT engages very close to the floor.

It could be because of the CM flywheel tolerances. If the lip is a few microns taller than the stock lip, the engagement point will be higher.

Interesting, perhaps a pairing of CM Flywheel + OEM Clutch / PP would be incompatible.

I wonder if AR can chime in and provide measures from some CM flywheels vs OEMs? I might be interested in this combo when it comes time to change mine out. (I was going to do HPFs option for stock engagement.)

What do you all think about engine/drivetrain durability when replacing DMF with SMF? Could it increase stress? What about engine balance?

I was set on using DMF again, but now this combo seems attractive. The Spec FW is lower price and could be very similar. There's just a lack of info here.

About the engagement point of the ACT: just try it and you will see that it's in fact very nice ! I did miss the one 1-2 shift and one 2-3 shift at the track (and I think it was my mistake) out of many races but I find the engagement point much better than stock overall. It helps you shift very fast from 2-3 and 3-4, and this is very handy. When driving around town you have the feeling that you are driving a focused car, it's very engaging and fun to drive, and not tiring at all. I really don't think the ACT engagement point is a problem...

Maybe because you have the short throw shifter. I'm constantly disengaging it a fraction of a second before I'm all the way in gear, causing a misshift at the strip (usually the 1-2 shift). It's mostly due becuase I have to press the clutch to the floor, then shift into next gear, then release where before I could be shifting as I'm pressing/releasing the clutch. It would be one combined action as opposed to 2 separate actions.

Which Tranmission mounts? Black?

Also it looks like you have the enforcer cups? Is there any additional vibration from them?
