Watchdog This Week It Looks Like It Is About Bmw: 19/92012 BMW AGAIN ON WATCHDOG
Hi,
update: 19/9/2012 watchdog on bmw again about insurance companies not paying up my mate just messaged me to say Watchdog this week, looks like they are going after BMW !!! on the show info it says: Episode 1 of 8, Series 30 DURATION: 1 HOUR Stories featured include the security flaw that allows thieves to drive off with a popular family car, the all-inclusive resort where guests have suffered food poisoning, and the hunt for the UK's worst savings account. Hopefully it is about the obd port issue, and now BMW will do something about it. Watchdog is on bbc 1 this Wednesday. Last edited by E93learner; 09-19-2012 at 03:39 PM.. Reason: 19/9/2012 UPDATE |

I hope they have covered BMWs.
I would suggest all of you to start contacting them to cover BMW as well. This is golden chance to raise our concerns. I have just sent them an e-mail and requested them to cover BMW. It may be too late, but they still have some time to modify / cover BMWs.

Watchdog's report on how easy it was/is to get into MKIV Golfs/Octavias/SEATs/Audis did wonders. Every low life in the country found out you get into any of those cars with a flat head screwdriver.

Thanks for the heads up mate!
I've just posted this up on Facebook in an attempt to make as many (ordinary) people aware of the issue. Perfect timing too, will be enquiring if the service manager will be watching said program, as I have a service on Wednesday morning at Sytner |

We should also paste this on BMW facebook page and send a link to their customer services e-mail.

Popular family car? Is that how you'd describe a BMW? Popular executive salloon. Sure.
I wouldn't be so sure this is about BMW until it's actually on TV. Let's save from spamming BMW social media until we've actually seen the show I hope it is of course !

Very true.
I'm absolutely gutted for all our friends on here who have had their cars taken, I would feel exactly the same. I have personally experienced theft from one my cars, family have had cars stolen, friends have had cars stolen. But don't lose sight of the fact ALL CARS OF ALL MAKES CAN BE STOLEN. The only variable being how quickly this can be done. Yes, there is organised criminality exploiting a vulnerability within the OBD port of BMW's. If it wasn't that it would be exploiting a weakness with your home security to get the keys (still favourite) if not that then directly from you while you're in it (thankfully very rare) By all means, make yours harder to steal than the next guys, don't leave things of value on display, try not to park in secluded areas. This will all help. There are far easier cars to steal , of equal interest to organised gangs, than a BMW. I hope BMW do address this issue, I'm annoyed by it's existence, I don't particularly want to see it advertised across the nation though. It's bad enough seeing it pasted all over the car forums! If it wasn't the OBD it would be something else, there's always a way! Trust me

Hiding your head in the sand won't make it go away, you know.... I think, the more coverage this gets, the better!...then BMW will have to do something about it...just like the cracking wheels... yes, all cars can be stolen....but there IS AN ISSUE with the OBD BMW thefts! and I think BMW needs to sort it out!....keepin it down low and hoping that BMW sorts this out....you'll be waiting for a long long very long time... Some very "cool and relaxed" people who think this whole thing is just hysteria...well, I'd rather be called a paranoid schizo and still have a car! |

No no no. I fully accept this is a real and scary situation which is why I am taking measures to secure my car.
However, as said - let's wait until Wednesday and see if the issue being discussed is actually being covered before we set off the fanfare; lest alot of people end up with egg on their faces.
