Crackle "Pop corn" exhaust
Hello,
I recently purchased an 07 e90. I come from the Subaru STi community, so in modding this car I really want to get a great sound out of it. I know it is not a Subaru and it's a completely different car, but I was wondering if anyone has any idea which exhaust set up will allow me to attain the crackle and popping noise during down shifts and hard acceleration that a lot of VW's and some E92's with after market set ups have. I know some people pull it off with straight pipe axel backs with cats, I'm just unsure. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot |

You need to run an E85/soy sauce blend.
But seriously, you should be getting that gurgle sound on downshifts, is that what ur talking about?

Tune your car rich and keep your cats. The unburnt hydrocarbons will exit the engine and ignite in the cats making the sound you are talking about. A free flowing rear section should make the sound more obvious.
I'm not sure about this, but removing the front cats in the downpipes, but keeping the secondary cats may make the sound louder as well. My thinking is that the excess hydrocarbons will ignite only in the secondary cats, which is closer to the exhaust tip. If the hydrocarbons burn in the first cats, the sound may be muffled by the secondary cats. |

You can make it pop all day stock. Just lay ur foot on the gas. Like lay it. Not even press then let go. The wastegates and CANflap will make it gargle all day long. Do the simple golf tee mod it wil amplify it also.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I drive a 335i, stock as of now and I was at the impact show here in MD, and a vendor told me I need down pipes with an aftermarket exhaust with no resonators to get the crackle and popcorn sound.

I have BMW perf exhaust w/ AR catless downpipes and it gurgles and pops like mad, turns heads is an understatement. I always find myself driving without the radio on because im just listening to the sweet music of the n54

I came in here thinking it had to be an MHD burble thread. Love that feature on MHD.

A lot of that unburned fuel combusts in your turbine housing. I'm all for the pops/burbles and I hate to be the fun police but this feature is known to prematurely destroy turbos.
