Being a recent 2007 335i owner I'd like to learn about the engine and how the entire car works together. I don't like the idea of installing mods and not knowing how they affect my car so that is a prime reason as well.

I practically have no knowledge of cars and their inner workings at all, so what would be the best bet? I've already started on the sticky'd engine thread.

The way I learn about stuff like this is seeing how everything works in the BIG picture, or at least how parts work in a major section. Learning about individual parts does nothing except confuse and disinterest me.


Is there like a complete 3D guide of the 335i that shows how everything works together? It almost has to be a visual guide with videos/pictures because if not I have no working knowledge and it just becomes jumbled up.


I REALLY want to learn my car so if anyone could help I'd be so appreciative!!!!

Edit: Also, what are some terms that I should know right off the bat? Not only for general engine inquiries but mods as well? For example, "boost"

Well, no such thing exists. Cars have become so complex that even a mechanic fresh out of school has tens of thousands of dollars in student loans to learn the inner workings of everything. Cars aren't just nuts and bolts anymore, and even those nuts and bolts have become more complex than a decade ago.

The "big picture" involves a lot of interdependent computers, complex sensors and control systems, and significant amounts of metal parts to turn fire into propulsion.

The best way to get the 1000 foot view would be to shadow a tuner / competent tech. Books typically start with history, theory, and then into the individual parts before ever getting to the stuff you are looking for.

I think that for your level, starting off at the boring individual parts step is unavoidable. Explaining what boost is before understanding the function of natural aspiration and what cams, valves, and pistons do will only lead to confusion and / or more questions.

Learn how any engine works offline,they all work basicaly the same, look up direct injection and read up on that, and then look up how a turbo works. You should get a basic understanding of how engines and modding this engine works. More boost=more power. So the mods allow you to run more boost and make more power.

reading threads and researching. I did not have a clue as well back in September 2008.

Man, I'd at least like to learn the entire car in BASIC form, then I can at least have a working knowledge of it and branch off into detail from there.

Spend alot of time reading on this forum couPled with other forums and the wealth of knowledge is there. Alot of stuff is awesome reading material for times when your bored or just need some stuff to read in the toilet to help with doing number 2. Works wonders for me

Lots of time reading and even experience goes into the knowledge about cars. Like anything else you just need to get your hands dirty, make a couple mistakes, but be smart about it and do any research you can in advance.

A helpful "mentor" is a good too if you know someone that has been there and done that.
