Night Mode
I've noticed in the settings menu for my NAV (2011 E91 LCi) that there's a 'night mode' setting. I've had a play with this and it seems to do naff all! It doesn't change or dull the display, so what's the point in the setting? and shouldn't the 'night mode' be automatic?

Getting confused here...
The screen dimming is fully auto dependant on ambient light from full sun to pitch black (nothing so basic as 'lights on') Night mode is a separate manual option to invert the map colours (black sky etc) to make it less intrusive, which some may prefer, especially on long mway drives or rural places (where it gets properly dark) Even in 'day mode' the auto dimming screen goes so dim at night than you don't even need 'night mode', but as said it has it uses, i.e. letting the kids sleep as it doesn't shine in their faces. You can assign a shortcut button to 'night mode' (I use button 8) then you can switch between night and day at your pleasure ![]() Last edited by doughboy; 09-24-2012 at 08:16 AM.. |

Agreed - it is Hand-Matic (Don't forget to mention the stars in the night sky!!) You would think that with all the technology in these cars it would be automatic. My Garmin can manage it - it even inverts colour shen going through a tunnel. Mike |

I expected the 'night mode' to invert map colours to black or something like that. but it doesn't seem to. I'll have a play around tonight and see what happens.

From memory you pull the iController to the right & go into settings, select night mode - as doughboy says, assign it to a shortcut button, I use 7 with maps on 8 - do you know there's also a grey traffic view?
edit: It may depend on Nav version, I have a 2010 Business Nav |

Agree, but the car nav screen gradual dimming IS fully automatic, the nav display and dash is so dim at night you don't even need night mode really, its just a nice touch. The 'display brightness' setting is a just a 'set-once' base setting about which the system adjusts itself automatically depending on ambient light. But Garmin / tom tom etc have no auto dimming, they just crudely swap between bright white day and black night views with nothing in between. My tom tom (latest go live 1005) always changes at the wrong time and I have to change back (so i set it on manual with a shortcut on the screen), and then only the map goes dark, if you use the menu that is still blinding daytime white!! daft. |

I assume you have Nav but still use a TomTom, & I can't say I blame you, but where do you mount the TomTom without it looking cr@p? |

No, not in the BM.
I use a peugeot bipper van for daily transport for work (the most fun you can have with 75bhp, believe me) and use the Tom Tom in that, as the van has no rear view mirror, the nav goes right where the mirror would go, perfect spot IMO. Agree, with the BMW nav hump its hard to put a stick on nav in wiithout it getting in the way & looking odd. |
