Finally gettin a tune, what should i prepare with
Hey E9XPost,
Long time, not talk. I have decided to finally pick up a Vishnu Rev2.5 SE or a Rev3.0 (havnet chosen, id appreciate some input) finally. Ive owned the car for a year as of September 12th, and ive loved it, even at stock performance. My main question is: What should i do to pre-pare for its first tune (that i know of, its used)? Specs: -2007 E92 335i N54 6MT -Roughly 37k miles. I bought the car a year ago with 33.4k miles and have put on about 3.6k miles. I have not changed the oil yet (i was going to wait until 5-7k, possibly). The car and engine have been feeling a little "off" and boring as of the last month or two, so i thought that some extra boost would bring back the passion ![]() My thoughts for getting a tune are two-fold: 1) Increase performance and fun 2) Use it to diagnose if my engine is running fine, which im not sure if it is, im a worry wart with it Thanks for the input, glad to be back on E9XPost after a 3-month hiatus! Eric

As for deciding between the Rev2.5 and 3, if money isn't a factor get the 3 for the simple reason that it has native USB connectivity. Otherwise, you can run all the latest maps on the 2.5, it just requires fiddling with a serial to USB adaptor when you want to connect to your laptop. Secondly, if you have a manual transmission, you can integrate the NLS feature with a few extra wires on a Rev3. Not possible with 2.5 Lastly, if you plan on running meth and the Vishnu E85 sensor at the same time, you want a Rev3 as it has multiple external channel inputs. With the 2.5, it's either/or. Hope that helps.

As far as 2.5 vs 3.0 goes, i have no intentions of going with meth now or in the future for a multitude of reasons. I plan on maxing myself out with FMIC/DPS/Cat-back/DCI. The NLS, is it worth having? I dont drag race (like once a year maybe) and simply wanted a nice boost in power for getting into trouble ![]() Money definitely is a factor though, and id much rather buy 2.5 if i could get away with it. When you say 2.5 isnt USB-native, does that mean i wont be able to connect to my laptop with it? Thanks for the info!

Basically cowl off, engine cover off, remove coils, swap plugs, button up. Also, have you given the JB4 a thought? Outstanding tune that has E85 autotuning. |

That said, Procede is a fantastic tune as well. Both the JB4 and Procede are piggyback tunes, where the COBB is a flash tune. To be honest, COBB sounds like the best option for you considering you install it via the OBD2 port from in the car, and you can change maps based on the mods you have. |

![]() You will be able to connect to your laptop with the 2.5, you just need to buy a serial to USB adaptor. I would go for something like this, but I know Vishnu has a specific cable they recommend. http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Compat...=USB+to+serial Last edited by Laguna Seca Blue; 09-30-2012 at 11:43 PM.. |

After reading everything above, would you recommend the Rev2.5 or the JB4? What im looking for is a strong tune for a stock car, useful datalogging, and features/customizable. I really am not sure of the major differences between the Rev2.5 and the JB4. If they are basically a draw, i will probably go for the JB4 simply because its a newer piece of hardware, and i could re-sell it for more down the road? ![]()

As far as I'm aware, I don't think the JB4 is a newer piece of hardware. In fact, the Rev2.5SE is functionally more capable. For example, the latest version of the JB4 can only retard ignition timing via CPS offsetting whereas the PROcede can both advance and retard timing, depending on octane concentration and a variety of other factors. As far as resale goes, I think they'll be similar. The 2.5SE is not vin locked so it can go from car to car without an unlock fee. I run a PROcede and am biased towards it not because I own one, but because careful research led me to the conclusion that it is the most capable tuning solution for the N54. Thats why i bought it. Don't take my word for it, search for comparative reviews and speak to independent retailers who sell all of the major tunes. Jeff@topgearsolutions is probably one of the most knowledgeable and helpful vendors on here.

I can attest to the fact that Procede is a solid chip. Not bashing JB4 at all, my buddy has one and his car runs pretty great as well. It's all subjective, but at the end of the day, the Procede pulls ahead.
Some people love the JB4 logging, I think it's a hot mess personally. Coming from a color blind guy... trust me, it's hell. There is no difference between 2.5 and 2.5SE aside from the cool looking case (that you will never see) and the fact that it is not VIN Locked to allow for better re-sale.
