Was just surprised with a Nikon....
Father just came home and has been trying to trick me about buying my mother a new camera, well he walked into my room with a nikon d40x. It seems like a great camera, came with a 18-55 lense, we need to buy a better more zooming lense but for now its ok...any tips on how to use and lenses? My dad has some old minolta lenses (very expensive) can they work with the nikon?

Nope... Your Minolta lenses are not compatible.

I got d40x for my birthday present too. My dad bought me the kit with the main lens and the 55-200mm lens as well. It's pretty sweet! I took it out when I went wakeboarding with my buddy and it takes some awesome sport/action shots. Now all I need to do is learn how to start using the camera manually and not always in the auto mode.
As far as lenses go I feel I'm pretty set for a little while. The only thing I may get is a larger zoom lens and maybe one of those goofy lenses that takes the really crazy, hazy shots like a fisheye. I also know some people will eventually chime in saying "oh you should have gotten the xti" but there basically the same and the only really noticable difference is the cameras caseing and the logos. The d40x also can't use older Nikkor lenses, well they can but only if you know how to manually focus. The older lenses can't use the auto focus feature.

hmm didnt know that about the lenses, have you ever taken sports shots (football, baseball) from a seat in a stadium with you 55-200 lense. Mine came with 18-55 so im looking to upgrade to either a 200 or 300mm lense depending on what the pros (you guys) suggest

^^No I haven't went to a sporting event with my camera yet, just some wakeboarding ones. I'll be sure to take it along to the season opener of Pittspuke v. Cleveland. I have season tickets in the dawg pound so I should be able to get some pretty good shots.
Heres the wakeboarding ones. Shot in auto mode and these are raw images... Thats not me haha, I'm no where near that good.

Your camera is only as good as your lenses are. Don't skimp on the glass! I have these two lenses, and I wouldn't settle for anything less. Both are sharp and very fast lenses. If you can't afford them, save up!

I will buy the Nikon D40x tomorrow too....but instead of getting the 18-55mm lens i go for the 18-135mm lens. My friend have the same camera with the same lens and it is definately better than the 18-55mm lens.
u can consider that ! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...D_IF_AF_S.html |

Im going to go over to ritz camera today and ask them about lenses. Tell them what im looking to use it for and price range and hope that they can find me one under 400. If they can I think ill buy it and head over to training camp (dolphins) and take some pictures

ya thats the problem, it doesnt have autofocus built in (i dont thnk) reading the directions it says it does but I couldnt get it to auto focus. Im going over to Ritz Camera tomarrow after the gym to see if they can either A) make it auto focus, or B) exhange (ill pay the difference) for one that does auto focus. Its not a big deal to be honest it would just be nice to take advantage of that feature.

Review of the 18-200mm VR lens:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm It has image stabilization (Nikon calls it vibration reduction = VR) which makes it a great lens...costly tho... |
