Looking for a summary...
It's been a year or so since I sold my 335i with a few mods and purchased an M3. I've been hanging out at m3post since then, so I haven't been keeping up with the N54 community.
Seems like the past year or so has been pretty significant, with upgraded turbo kits, single turbo kits, e85, etc. I know this is a little selfish, and that I could , but I'd appreciate if anyone could give me the N54 updates for the past year, in a nut shell. Much appreciated and I'm sorry for being a bit of a tool. Congrats to all of you that have continued to push the envelope of the platform!!

Not sure who Vargas and Beck are, but I don't miss the old Shiv and Terry pissing contests. FWIW, I always felt that Shiv was more informed and voted with my $$$ and bought the Procede.

I L.O.V.E. the V8 in the M, but there is something pretty special about a platform that only requires a couple thousand bucks to add 100+ HP and torque.
I am happy with my decision, mostly because of the improved chassis and reliability of the S65, especially looking forward to my first track excursion in the M3 next Friday at Road America. Perhaps I'll finally write a full comparison once I have some track time in both.

Beck = Rob Beck turbo upgrades to stock housings with larger turbine and compressor wheels to flow more air with less strain. Vargas = Vargas turbos......a recent competitor on the scene with a large industrial base. They are competing directly against the Rob Beck product and are also trying to fabricate a custom built twin turbo stage 3 upgrade to get into the 600+ hp range. This is intended to compete against the Vishnu single turbo offering which has been on the market for several months and has something over 11 customers so far. Shiv's single turbo platform upgrade is custom fabricated exhaust manifold married to a large single turbo and has dynod over 650 hp already. Stay tuned to these forums for more drama! |

llma- I believe there have been over 20 single turbos sold to date. Vishnu/FFTEC can correct me if I'm wrong.

OP,
There has been some great expansion in the Ethanol usage. The top Tuners/PiggyBacks have all taken advantage of E85 pump gas. I went the Pro Tune COBB route and running S1+ E50 (50% ethanol) and on a DynoJet 415, whp with just DCI, FMIC, and COBB Pro Tune. which is very competitive to the other flash tuners/piggybacks.

To add a little. On a completely dry track, I was able to hit around 140-145 on the main straight in the 335i. In the M3, I was only able to get to 135-140 at the same point, but I never had a completely dry track, so I always let off a little early and maybe didn't carry as much speed into the corner. I'll have to wait until I get some better weather to know which is faster. My hunch is that the M3 would maybe be a little faster, but not by much. There was a stock 335is riding my ass for several laps, but I was getting slowed by cars ahead of me, so not totally fair. Even still, I was really impressed with the guys driving, especially a stock car hanging close to me.

I wouldn't buy a m if I wasn't going to supercharged it...stock the m just feels slow to me. I'm anxious for the next gen m3 with turbos, should be fun!

Straight line speed definitely carries more weight with some people than others. There was a guy in my group in a 600+ HP Camero that said he runs in the low 120's in the quarter mile (street tires, not drag prepped) that I walked all day long at Road America. He couldn't put the power down in the straights and it was no contest everywhere else.

I know the m's are mid 12 sec cars stock, at least dct cars, but when I test drove one it wasn't for me, it felt slow, but it's not really that slow, if that makes sense ha

I know exactly what you mean. It takes a different driving style than a modded 335i, more shifting, keep it above 5k rpms (still 3400 left ). If you don't do that, it feels pretty mild. That is part of why I love it, kind of feels like a "normal" car around town, but when you want to, hold on to you f*#king hat!! I was hanging with 911 S's and even a turbo, every vette out there but the ZR-1, etc. The cars are close enough to where driver skill matters more than torque/hp figures.
