Check engine warning symbol in the dash display
I just got a Engine warning symbol in the center of my gauges. This is the display that houses how much fuel is left on a tank etc. The symbol I got after extremely hard acceleration is the engine with part of it colored in in Yellow. Indicating " Full engine power no longer available" It is on the page in the lower right of this link http://www.e90post.com/goodiesforyou/indicators.jpg
Any ideas why this light came on??

Could be anything really. Do you have a tool that can scan your codes? I got this and when I ran my scan I got "swirl flap actuator" fault.
Like I said though, could be anything and nothing too serious like getting into limp mode due to the hard acceleration. |

I have an OTC scan diagnostic scanner, but am not sure if it will scan a German spec BMW. Did you get the same Engine Display?

Mine came on and the engine lost about half of it's power. I pulled off the autobahn and shut the car off. Started it back up and the symbol was gone. I proceeded to get back on the autobahn and pressed the pedal to drop down into passing gear to get up to speed fast, and the symbol came on again. This time the engine lost pretty much all power and slowed me down and died. I tried to crank the car and it wouldn't start again. Pulled the key out and inserted it again and it started without the symbol. Is there a code stored possibly with a malfunction?

What tool do you have? Did BMW replace a part? I am a little leery about getting on the car hard now cause I am afraid that it will do the same again. We aren't supposed to pull off the side of the autobahn here.

Yes it has stored that code for sure. I have the BT scan tool. They replaced my air intake manifold citing carbon buildup. Some people felt it could have been cleaned but I didn't care as the car is under warranty. I didn't have to pay a cent.

I am 99% sure it has nothing to do with the FMIC. My BMW dealer has been pretty darn backed up with cars to repair, winter tires changes etc. I am going to BMW on the 14th.

Went to the dealer today like I stated. BMW found nothing wrong. Now I will tell you this. I did have my Chipexpress tuner on Max setting when this happened. Before going to the dealer today I removed the tuner. They said they couldn't find a single issue with it. Any ideas on how to get rid of this factory setting in the BMW computer so I can run Max power setting on my tuner?

As for the piggyback triggering a limp mode, it's typical for such a devise when running at the max setting. By design they trick the DME into delivering more fuel to make the extra power - they do this by sending a signal to the DME that enough fuel is being delivered. The higher the setting on the piggyback the less fuel the DME thinks is being injected. Eventually (over time) the DME will determine there must be something wrong with the fuel pump in which ase it trigger a rail pressure sensor fault sending the car into limp mode. There isn't much you can do about it other than turn the piggyback settings down or go with a DME reflash. |
