It has been estimated to cost 500 billion dollars a year to make all of the necessary repairs/upgrades to this country's infrastructure, which is badly needed as evidenced by the steam pipe explosion in NYC, this bridge collapse along with countless other roads/power grids/etc. that need work throughout this country.........but our brilliant president thinks its more important to rebuild Iraq before we rebuild america.........nice.

Lets not all jump to conclusions yet... They were working on the bridge at the time, and something could have triggered the collapse...

+1....parts of rural china that i've been to have better roads than most of US.

the US economy and population is growing fast! but the outdated infrastructure is starting to show its wear and maximum capability. Manhattan needs to be taken down and rebuilt from start....that should be the first step...

If you see the pictures of the slabs with cars underneath and the estimates of the number of vehicles that fell into the river, it is going to be much worse than the number posted to this point. Thank God that the school bus full of kids was spared.

I remember watching a showing about 5 years ago regarding the screwed up state of affairs with US DOT and the Condition of thousands of Bridges being very poor.

This disaster occurred just 15 miles from my house. Fortunately nobody I know was involved.

The construction work happening on the bridge only involved replacing guard rails along the edges. Who knows if we'll ever find out the real cause of it.

Do you think the pres gives two sh*ts about Iraq? Ummm really.. NO. I doubt he even gives a sh*t about his own country. People like him are all about their greed and wont stop until they get what they want.

Back to topic:

Thats a very scary situation to be in and I cant help but to think how many of these same bridges are around. Kind of freaky. I cross a bridge similiar to that everyday and today, I found myself speeding to get off. [Hey you never know!!]

God bless those invovled.

A drop in the bucket compare to the cost of Iraq.

Looking forward to buy that countdown clock for G.W. Bush. Good riddance!

I understand a lot of people hate Bush but blaming him for the bridge collapse is just lame. I see all the brain surgeons on this board are coming out of the woodwork.

If he is the "real" president of the US (not D. Cheney), he has a say on how resources are allocated.

Instead of spending on productive R&D and maintenance work on local economy, he choose to spend on destructive initiatives on other territories.
