Best beaches on the East Coast

Hey all. So Im lookin for some reccomendations. Im planning a road trip by car the last week in August. I live outside Boston MA and would like to take a nice vacation somewhere on the East Coast beaches. I really dont know anything outside of the Jersey Shore and Mass though.

-Sandy Beaches are better than rocky beaches
-Crowded beaches suck

basically those are the only 2 criteria I'm interested in. What do you guys think?

If you can drive a bit further the beaches in Destin Florida are about as good as you will find.

It depends on what you want out of the beach. I'd assume florida has everything to satisfy your requirements, but seeing as I've never been to the florida coast, i'll offer you some knowledge of what I know.

If you're a surfer, I have to recommend VA beach. It's the shortest drive for you, and its not as crowded as OBX.

OBX (outer banks of NC) and myrtle beach both are probably way too crowded for you.

Hilton Head Island, SC gets my recommendation as well. They have the nicest accomodations, it's extremely quiet (it's like a retirement community almost). The food is great, and the beaches are well kept. The only downside about this place is that the water doesnt really move. If you're actually looking to have some interaction with waves/maybe you have some kids, its not very exciting. But as a vacation/relaxing getaway, its pretty top notch

I'm not a surfer, and I'm 20, so no kids :P

How long is the drive from Boston down to VA?

I've heard alot about the Jersey shore as well, is it really that good?

Florida seems far, I'm guessing that would probably be a 2 day trip... not worth if I'm only goin for a week, I guess.

Stay local go to York Beach. Wasn't that busy when I went a week ago when it was 90 degrees. Water was great.

I am going back at the end of August(hopefully weather is good). I'm just going to go to a hotel near the area.

+1 for Outer Banks of NC. Not crowded. Laid back. The further south you go (down to Hatteras) even more deserted.

Hilton Head - no way, traffic sux, crowded streets. Maybe if you had a family and stayed in 1 plantation the whole week. My parents lived there for 12 years.

Go check out Maryland Beaches for a week- generally heard good things

Bethany Beach, MD

Ocean City, MD (may be too crowded?)

Dewey Beach, MD

Rehoboth Beach, MD

Go to Nantucket, Block Island, or Martha's Vineyard for a week. Or rent a place out on the Cape. The only drawback is that it's not much of a 'road trip', as you leave your car at the ferry parking lot.

Give us a report when you return.

All the beaches in East coast are nasty, water is brown and dirty...the only one that's nice is Miami beach...

other than that, go to the Caribbean if you want nice beaches with lots of nude women...

Not true...the dirty/nasty part...
Miami and Lauderdale (Holiwood) beaches are nice, Daytona Beach is nice, Melbourne has some nice beaches and not crowded. That is for the surfing side.

The Gulf side is definitely not for surfing, but has some nice relaxing beaches from Marco Island, North of Tampa, and Panhandle.

And of course, the Keys have some great beaches...

It all depends what beach you go to.

As I stated I went to York beach a few weeks ago. The water was actually nice. It was blue not some weird nasty color and felt great.

Granted, when I lived in florida the beaches down there were better. But when it's 96 degrees here, Going for a 22 hour road trip isn't smart.

Being an ex-FL resident I'd have to agree that there are plenty of nice beaches in FL. That being said, a lot around this Mid-A area are ugly in comparison....VA beach, Ocean City, etc. are just gross in comparison.

The beaches in St.Pete and Clearwater are beautiful...some of them can be somewhat crowded but there are some really quiet ones such as Ft. Desotao(ranked in the top 5 beaches in the US).

Bethany, Dewey, and Rehoboth are all in Delaware, with Ocean City right down the road in Maryland. What's good about these beaches is that they are all near each other and you can check them all out. Rehoboth is a big time gay beach. Dewey is fun and full of college age people. Ocean City has an awesome strip and there are usually a bunch of import car shows during the summer but it is usually crowded. I think Bethany is quiet for the most part.
