DIY Intake Manifold Cleaning
Hey everyone
So this saturday I will be attempting the various DIYs to clean our intake manifolds (CHEER) My question for you, what is the best way to get the engine to the various TDC i will need? Jack the car and turn the wheels or release Ebrake? I want to do it myself, but if i need a helping hand i might be able to find someone. Also, how many cans of carb cleaner will i need to effectively do this thing? Any additional experience, warnings, concerns, complaints, painful revelations are greatly appreciated Best L

I used the bolt on the crank pulley, had to remove the pan and fan assembly first but that was no big deal. Then I used a wooden dowel inserted in the spark plug opening on the cylinder I was cleaning. It was real easy to see the stroke with the dowel moving up and down.
I used walnut shell so no help on the carb cleaner question. |

Because you will have ample access to the starter, just get a piece of wire and make a brief connection between the positive battery jump terminal and the starter solenoid blade terminal. You will have to remove the connector from the engine harness to the solenoid, so don't forget to hook it back up before you put the intake manifold on.

I changed my spark plugs at the same time so i just turned the crank while they were out. Takes 5 minutes to remove the fan. I didn't have to use many cans of carb cleaner. I used seafoam and let soak for a while.

I just pulled the connectors from the coils and cranked the ignition. Just punch the start button till it turns for a second. Check to see that the valves you haven't cleaned are now closed. Repeat if necessary.
