Australia has reached the World Cup for the first time since '74, defeating two-time champ Uruguay on penalty kicks Wednesday.

We are already through all that stuff and compete as well in the 2006 World Cup. But we(as in The Netherlands) lost last saterday from Italy. 1-3 damned

I watched the game last night. It was almost as emotionally taxing as waiting for my BMW to arrive

It was a real epic game that went down to penalties. The whole of Australia is still celebrating.

Australia has deserved qualification for at least the last 2 if not 3 world cups - we have been very unlucky. In addition to that, our qualifiying group only has 1/2 a place, which means we first have to win our group (Oceania which is piss easy), and then play a sudden-death two-legged playoff against the bottom team of another confederation, usually South America. This is very unfair because "full" confederations have a series of at least 18 games to earn points to qualify. For us it comes down to one tie, against a really tough opposition - the worst bit is because we are not in a full group, we don't get enough "real-game" experience. That will change from 2009 onwards - we have been accepted into the Asian confederation.

Guus Hiddink was definitely the difference though - he brought it all together. The tactics, the substitutions at the right times, and the set pieces. The complete package, nothing short of football genius :rocks:

Guus is not the only Dutchman coaching a foreign team this World Cup. Dick Advocaat coaches South Korea and Leo Beenhakker coaches Trinidad and Tobago(Carribean)

My favourite though (from Holland), is Ruud Gullit

To me he is up there with the all time greats. Some of the things he did when playing for Milan (one diving header in particular) I will never forget.

How do you reckon Holland will perform in 2006 ?

It would be a nice time to do European Delivery next summer as well, since Germany is the host to World Cup '07.

Unfortunately, I hear tickets have been sold out for a long time asides from those tickets you can probably gets for ridiculous prices from scalpers. Damn scalpers.

i read some where that they have tickets for 20 people boxes at teh main stadium for all 6 games that were being played there...it was like $470,000...this was like 3 weeks ago...

Guus Hiddink is the current Australian national coach. He is contracted until at least the end of the FIFA 2006 world cup.
