Which E92 is best?

Hello everyone! I am new to this forum.

My reason of this thread was to gather some ideas and opinions to what you think is the most complete e92 out there.

I am 19 years old and currently own a BMW Mini.. But can't wait to get a E92 coupe! I am planning to get one in the next 24 months when my insurance drops a bit but the question is which model is the best out there? Is it the 320d M sport that does 0-60 in 7.6 secs which I find really impressive as well as 57mpg and road tax 'B' or the beast of the 335i M sport which is unwordable and my dream car. Except the M3

If any of you have any of these cars, I would appreciate your reviews and pictures of your motors!

Thanks alot!

Welcome to the forum.

'Best' really depends on what you want from the car. Broadly speaking you have the choice of SE or M Sport. I went for the SE as the M Sport wasn't out when i ordered. Choosing again, would probably go for the SE, as M Sport suspension is a touch on the hard side for me. If its the M Sport trim you want, then you just need to pick the engine! You could decide whether the following things matter to you:
  • petrol or diesel
  • 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder
  • auto or manual
  • whether running costs (fuel, road tax, insurance are an issue for you)
  • how much you want to spend on options (wheels, sat nav)
  • how much you can afford in total to spend!

I wanted petrol and a 6 cylinder. I also wanted reasonable fuel economy so for me the 325i was best. The minimum wheel size I even considered was 18". Leather was also essential.

I'm sure there will be loads more replies to this and good luck deciding.

I would agree that the 335d is the best all-rounder, but any 6-pot diesel would be a good bet.

As I own a 320d (E91) I personally wouldn't go for a 4-pot diesel. Don't get me wrong, it is a great engine with good punch and economy to match, but it just doesn't sound all that great on a sporty car.

The 2.0 4-pot petrol on the 320i would be good if you are on a budget. By all accounts it goes well enough and sounds smooth, but it isn't a 6 cylinder.

If you are a real petrolhead then any 6-pot will suit, and you might as well get the biggest you can afford as I don't think fuel economy is that different across the range.

So in short, you'll probably like any of them, but 6-pot is best.

just for clarification purposes, the 320d is a 6 pot but the 318d is 4 pot?

thanks

Both the 318d and 320d have 2000 cc, and are 4 cylinder engines.

I have an E90 and I went for the 6pot has BMWs are so much better with the 6cylinder engines. Though my engine is not available in the E91, any diesel 6 pot is best for fuel economy and sporty drive. Obviously if running costs are not an issue then flooring a petrol version is more satisfying.

Might be worth looking closely at the 335i - with turbos, it makes it a very flexible motor to tune up, sod the M3, by the time you finish paying for that you could have spent less money on a faster tuned 335i.

Unless badges are all that counts, I'd go with the smart option and tune a 335i

Diesels are nice, i guess, but for me it's gotta be petrol. Target power for my project is 400bhp at the wheels and 380 ftlb torque at the wheels.

Should leave Carl's new R8 for dead let alone the M3 :P

Welcome,

Although the 335d and 335i are both awesome, I'm thinking that at your age, factoring in insurance, you're more realistically looking at a midrange model. The 325i and 320d are worth considering. I think there really isn't a "bad" E92, so you probably can't go too far wrong. Quite a few used ones coming up now too. M-Sport models look better (to most people) but the suspension can be unforgiving (depends what you're used to). Best advice is to make sure you have a good test drive before committing to buy.

Good luck.

Best I've seen is 35.6 mpg for a 70 mile trip, mostly motorways with a few miles of London roads.

My usual mpg is around 29-30mpg and the lowest I've seen is 23mpg at the end of a trip. The onboard computer has been down to 17mpg but this has always improved by the time I get to my destination.

Maybe I'm not driving my car hard enough?

if anyone can get it close to 40mpg then let me run it for a bit, cos I am mr lightfoot.

Now done 12673 miles in my 335D I record all the fuel (26 fillups) that goes in and so far the average is 41.441 MPG. cost of fuel £1295

best of 539.5 miles on 55.50 litrs = 44.19
worst 422.8 miles on 50.50 = 38.06

since 6K miles its gotten more frugal
last 6491.1 miles on 693 litres = avg 42.57

NB:BP ultimate gives me a slightly worst figure than Total standard brew

it will be interesting to see when the 19"s go on (tomorrow?) to replace the std 17's if the fuel consumption goes down.

Impressed with those figures Red355, dont know if I have the patience to keep records to see if I can match them though!

Hi,

Ordered a 325D M sport a couple of weeks ago- It will be Energy Efficient engine, think that it is the best of both world
Economy, 6 pots.... if you are on a budget, this make sense.
I agree 335D or 335i are cool, but too expensive for me though

I averaged 40.3mpg in mine a couple of weeks ago, on my 35 mile trip to work. Normally more like 30mpg though.

Good mpg from some 335i owners. I only get 26-27, but my trips are local and not much dual carriageway or motorway work. Low 20's avg on spirited drives. Does anyone know if the fuel efficient engine upgrades are coming out on future 335i's and can current models be converted?

As of Sept 335i's will have regenerative braking, a special battery and a new alternator. This will result in a 3% improvement in mpg (aprox 1.5 - 2 mpg) and will move the 335i into a lower tax bracket (a £200 saving next year).

4 cylinder 3 series will be fitted with stop/start technology which will imrove mpg further, but 6 cylinder variants are not being fitted with this in MY08.

None of these technologies will be available for retrofitting, IMO.

Can't wait for my 335i m-sport coupe. It is being built in early Sept for an early Oct delivery .
