Rest Button

So today is the first cold day around here and the rest button might be useful. When i tried it it didnt seem to turn on! The few times before i experimented with it, it would sometimes go on. What are the "restrictions" on when the rest button will work and not work? Besides being 77 degrees outside, does anything else need to be at a certain setting for it to work? Thanks!

nope, nothing else. just push the button right after you shut off the car. not sure how long you have, but it's gotta be at least 30 seconds from my experience.

The temperature has to be below a certain level. The ignition must be off and not in the on position. I am not quite sure about this but there might be a posibility that you have to have the keys out of the slot before it works. I'll confirm next time. Also, if you stopped your car for 1 hour for example and return to the car and it still have some residual heat, you can switch the car to the 'on' position and then press the "REST" button. It will be 'reactivated' this way.

folks, what is this rest button? I don't have it on my car. Does it have something to do with heated seat?

Pretty funny how I don't even own an E90, yet I know more about the car than most owners...I even RTFM.

It is on your climate control on the passenger side. This button is use the engine heat to heat the interior of your car. For example if you pick up someone at the air port or school and waiting in your car, you can use 'REST' with engine off and key fob in the slot. I'm not sure how car with comfort access work.

Why wouldn't you just keep your car running? How much gas will you save by not having your car at idle for 15 min -- a thimble.

I prefer my heated seats.

I think idling for 1 min = 3km driving or something like that.

Idleling the car not good for the environment...not that I am a tree hugger but since the engine is warm it can produce heat w/o wasting extra energy....great for cold places like canada....good thinking by bmw i think....

OMG

That is completely nitpicky. That is like arguing to recycle a platic toothpick.

If you really felt that stringly about it, you drive an electric car or at least commute -- so don't come in here and say idling the car for 15 minutes on a cold day is bad for the environment. Jesus.

And for the record, I am an "Environmentalist", not some oil tycoon -- ok?

Okay, that's a differnt story. I'll buy that -- except when I tried it, it ran the fan. Does yours?

The story I read of it's existence was a scenario where you are waiting to pick up at kid at school.

The last Joburg winter wasn't very cold so I found no need to use it. Got the car in June. And the 2 or three times I did run it I left the car so didn't notice. All I can say the car was a comfortable temperature when I came back.

What's wrong with it running the fan if you come back with the car warm and you don't have to leave your key in the car?

Probably nothing. I just am not used to leaving a car with electrical things running.

My last bimmer had five batteries in a little over three years.
