335is = N54 Engine, Normal Tune is +30 HP/TQ Performance Increase over non-IS 335s (offers temporary increased boost up to 360 HP/TQ), DCT Trans Option, PPK Cooling Upgrade

Performance wise, a 335is is closer to a 1M then the any of the 135/335s

The newer model year would lead you to think so, but luckily they kept the N54 in the 335is

I had my 2011 N55 for a year and traded her in for a 2012 N54 335is.

You were right, it's 320 HP / 300 TQ from the factory. Overboost temporarily takes the power to 320 HP / 370 TQ. For more exact info, read this article. If you scroll down, it contains the BMW NA Press Release on the 335is (info on the specific upgrades the IS receives): http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...nsmission.html

I was undecided between the 335i and 335is. The is has N54 320hp/332tq and short overboost of 370tq, 7 speed DCT. I'm a paraplegic so I figure I wouldn't be using the paddle shifters much so I opted for the 335i, M-Sport Pkg, 19" 230 wheels, NAV, Conv Pkg, Prem Pkg, Heated Seats and I love it. Just last week, a year after I bought it I added the BMW PE ($1,124)and PPK ($450) + installation cost ($420). I'm very happy with the new sound and added performance.

Of course there are aftermarket performance tunes with more hp/tq than the PPK but my plan is to keep her 6yrs/100k miles or longer.

Both are great cars and it all comes down to which one you want. I saved about $5000 by getting the 335i. Just spent $2000 in the exhaust and PPK.

Out of curiosity, if paddle shifters are an issue or you, being a paraplegic how is actually driving the car not a problem?
Not to be rude or anything, I was just curious.

No problem, I have handcontrols, with my left hand I steer and with my right hand I control the gas and brakes. Trying to use the paddle shifters would require me to let go of the gas to up shift, down shift I can do since my left hand is on the steering wheel. I'm looking at installing two toogle switches on the right side of the handcontrol so I can use my index finger to up/down shift. It can be done just have to find the correct size switches. Here's a pic of the controls.

The 335is is definitely worth getting if you are thinking of getting an Auto-tranny. The DCT is just swift. Not to mention the upgraded exhaust note, which IMO sounds classy and yet have an angry side to it.

If you want/need DCT => 335is [N54], if not =>335i [N55]

1) Looks: 335i + M-sport ~ 335is
2) Exhaust (OEM): 335i + PE > 335is
3) Tuning (OEM): 335i + PPK ~ 335is
4) Tuning (aftermarket): 335is > 335i

In my opinion (for non DCT) the better choice is 335i + PE exhaust + PPK + nice/quality wheels (the price for a new car will be the same as 335is).

The exhaust wont be the same.
N55 and n54 have their own distinct exhaust note.

I have never seen that before, but it really is amazing that you can control a car like that. Kudos!

But the question remains: What's the difference between the N54 in the 335is and a '07-'10 my 335i N54 with the PPK version 2 installed?

BMW Performance doesn't claim the overboost function for the PPK. But notice that it only adds 20 HP +17~34 Tq. but BMW claims that owners "really feel the difference" and there has been "good feedback". I have a sneaky suspicion that the overboost function in is the PPK as an unadvertised feature.

I'm going to be installing a boost gage soon, and I plan to install the PPK v.2 in the near future (I want the full cooling upgrade since 335i's tend to overheat when tracked or driven hard - see the epic thread on this forum). I should be able to easily see how much the boost is increased by getting to know the boost gage in stock form before installing the PPK.

I also like the fact that once you have the PPK v.2 installed on an N54 it is essentially the same engine as the 335is/Z435is/1SeriesM. The latter two cars have slightly more power because they have better under hood cooling (AFAIK).

The additional factory cooling mods are probably the only hardware differences. The tunes are prob more "polished" in the 335is & 1M since that's how they come from the factory. While the PPK is a Factory Option, it's still a 335i that has to be retrofitted for those cooling mods.

The 1M also is loaded with the "M" specific features (LSD, the MT trans, M-Dynamic Traction Control) that the non-M cars cannot be retrofitted for.
