Address Book Woes
My Sony Ericsson K790a integrates beautifully with the bluetooth function of iDrive and the calls are crystal clear, its extremely convenient, and a very welcome feature to me. EXCEPT! i can't seem to upload the address book/contacts list (whatever you choose to call it) to the iDrive interface. Is there anyway around this or am i doomed to a major incompatibility as far as this is concerned? There's no way i can do an OBEX push (Bluetooth protocol) to the iDrive computer? ex. upload the entire phone book the same way you'd upload it to Outlook or Mac OS X Address Book via standard bluetooth syncing protocols? There must be a way...
If anyone knows how, let me know! Once again, the model of my phone is a Sony Ericsson K790a, same family as K800i and runs on the same platform as the popular W800i (sold through Cingular here in the States). Thank you!

Well, I have the Nokia E65 and I can't sync the phone book with the system. The BMW bluetooth division(I think that's what they're called), told me that only the phones listed on the site can be synced(phone book) with the car. No other phone. I've tried my E65 and my sister's Nokia N73. Some people have had success with the Nokia N95 with the new firmware while others didn't. That's what I know.

Make sure the phone and, if it is smartphone that complete power is turned on. If it is a smartphone and it still does not work try Jetware Mobile software. It really improves the Bluetooth function on a lot of phones.

msimon: jetware mobile software is for windows mobile smartphones. my sony ericsson phone is not windows mobile based. thanks anyways.
MTL bimmer: i dont understand what you mean... what i'm asking is if there's any very TECHNICAL and COMPLICATED way to perhaps upload the phone book. aside from it just automatically working or not, is there like some kind of iDrive hack or something. i know it sounds far fetched but it might be out there. bluetooth has a special protocol called OBEX object push that allows you to manually transmit data from the phone to another bluetooth device. is there anyway to manually trigger this through idrive, something or other? or at my dealership, do they have a computer that plugs into the car that opens up a bunch of technical, behind-the-scenes idrive features that i could take advantage of to upload the phone book? or maybe even USB? let's get technical.

hey munich_fanboy --
Is your problem that none of your contacts transfers to the car? Or some do and you can't add new ones? I have a K790a and the contacts list transferred successfully to my 2006 330i... it works pretty well. If I add an entry to the phone, the car gets updated seamlessly. I don't think this is a phone firmware issue, as this feature has worked for me since I got the phone last September. Similarly, I wouldn't think it's a car firmware issue as my car has had old firmware (PROGMAN 19) for a long time... I would recommend that you delete the phone from your phone list and that you re-pair it. When you do this, make sure you stay in the car for a while, as the initial transfer process should happen immediately upon pairing. This is the only way I have gotten contacts to transfer to the car... by pairing the phone. I have never tried to push entries manually. I have 250+ entries, so my initial transfer took a while to complete. You'll know a transfer is happening because your phone will seem sluggish and almost "frozen" while data is being transferred. I hope this helps...

Otherwise, I think the answer you are looking for is not in an iDrive hack; this has to be initiated by your phone, not the car. The K790a has an option to allow you to send all contacts to another device. From Contacts, select Options > Advanced > Send All Contacts > via Bluetooth, pick your BMW and go... Have you tried this?

It's all good. Just had to leave the phone in the car longer as it paired. I now have full bluetooth functionality between my K790a and my E92. No problems. No hang-ups. It's all good. Thanks everybody!
