Just had an Oil Change @ 3200 miles and boy does it feel good

Had one of our Acura techs (who owns a BMR) do an oil changy (he's Korean) for me and I swear the next 4 miles I was leaving rubber all over the concrete jungle. I'm sure it probably had nothing to do with the Oil Change, but my car felt like a different beast...

BTW, used 6 quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 about $6/ea, a BMW filter from VOB in rockville for $10 (dude hooked it up a little). And paid our tech $10 (+$5 just for the hell of it). Took him about 20 minutes....

I think I'm going to put Nitrogen in the tires next week, which leads me to my next quetsion, what pressure would you put on 19" w/ Generals?

Why did it matter that he was Korean?

Cars always feel good after a change, but I'm sure it's just psychological.

So you put less oil than what's required and you used non recommended oil
as well?

My suggestion is to be cautious of the hype. You already have nitrogen in your tires, since it makes up 78% of what we call “air”. There are good reasons for putting 100% nitrogen in cars that are racing and in aircraft, but they don’t apply to street cars. So, IMO, spend the money on a good tire gauge. That is something that many of us could make better use of.

With regard to oil, there are 2,265,784 threads on this subject -- give or take. But Mobil 1 5W-30 as sold in the United States does not meet any BMW specs. Mobil 1 0W-40 meets BMW LL-01, and it the most readily available LL-01 oil outside of the BMW dealership network. In general and to over simplify, most 5W-30 oils sold in the United states are too thin to meet ACEA A3, which is the starting point for BMW approvals.

Here is a list: http://www.bimmernut.com/~billr/imag...pecialOils.pdf

being quite mechanically knoledgeable, i have never noticed anthing after an oil change?? i mean HOW CAN IT FEEL different

id understand if it was an old car and it was not running right and changed the plugs and she ran better of course you would notice the difference, but on a new 335i no way can you notice anything whatsoever

I don't know about the N54, but I've felt differences between oils, particularly when the viscosity changes from thicker to thinner; however that's not always a good thing. Although i'm sure having a Korean mechanic change your oil is worth at least 3-4 bhp over, say, a Canadian mechanic.

First off, my fault, it was Castrol, but yes only used 6 quarts.....When checking the OBC, it said oil level was fine after 6 quarts were put in. I bought 7 quarts thinking it would use another 1/2 or so.....should I have put another half in anyway?

Also, the Korean statement was because 11 of our techs or Korean and they say "Oil Changy"...sorry if anyone took offense.

As for the feel of it afterward, I said that I'm sure it was in my head......but it just felt better.......nuff said...

From empty, with oil filter change, you are supposed to put in 7 quarts. You should
have put all 7 in.

I just checked the obc and it says oil is at Max...

Also, re-checked the oil and it was Mobil 1.....Thanks Spool, for letting me know that I can drive on it for a couple thousand miles without worries. BTW, I also stopped by AutoZone in DC and got 7 quarts of 0w40

Well he must have actually put in 7 quarts because if you only put in 6, it's not going to read full.

If you know for a fact that the filter was changed, and he only put in 6 quarts (go count the bottles in the trash), I wouldn't care what the sensor says, go pour another bottle in ASAP. The engine needs 7 quarts when the filter is changed, period. Not 6.5, 7 quarts.

Why would you put less than what the car requires?
Do you think the service centers when they do the oil change
to our cars go by what the obc says or by what BMW in Munich
says?

It's not that big of a deal, why would u say such a thing.

Swoop, although it is not catastrophic to run 5w30 on our cars, i don't recommend using it for long period of time. maybe change it out after 4K miles. I spoke to you earlier and completely forgot that what i ran on my last cars are different than what you have now. haha heat stroke from fishing or something.

thicker oil lubricates moving parts better, and our engines run much hotter than N/A cars i'd go with a heavier oil.

if you want, me and Juan are going to change our oil soon and i don't mind changing out yours as well if you want me to. it's a 20 minute job.

Sounds good, Thanks Spoolio. 533oge, Fuck off

btw, I knew that we were supposed to use 7 quarts, but before I put the 7th in, we checked the level and it said full.....Just going by what it said. As for putting in Mobil1 instead of another brand's 5W30, I went to the store with full intentions of buying Mobil 1 0w40, but it wasn't available. I knew that 5w30 was also okay, especially in the summer, but forgot that Mobil1's 5w30 wasn't approved, my bad.

Regardless, should I put in the other quart of oil till I swap out the 5W30 for 0w40?

Stick with the Mobil 1 0W-40

I'd make the change before you use the last quart of the 5W-30. Just in case you need the Mobil 1 specs for the 0W-40 I placed them in my personal file.

I too changed my oil at about 3200 miles a couple weekends ago and put in 7 qts of Mobil 1 0w-40. The spent oil was black. It is hard to imagine it last for another 9,000 miles. But I have one question, why is BMW prejudiced against the dip stick?
