Anyone owned an E90 and a VXR8?
Interested to see what the opinion was on the two if you have owned both.
Now my car is doing very little in mileage im hankering for something a bit more fun and the fairer half has agreed on considering a vxr8! Have read a few reviews and they say the 8 handles similarly to a BMW but im dubious with its kerbweight. Have been out in a friends but his is heavily played with (circa 700 horses thanks to the monkfish supercharger) so its hard to tell. Any opinions would be greatly welcomed. |

I have driven and nearly bought one ... but 10mpg urban was a bit much !
The car was - IMO - quite well made given what I had heard ... it was comfy but big and heavy. Engine - lovely noise ...you need to get a sports exhaust on them though I have to say the standard one is quite fruity Performance - I found it quickish but not that quick ... I did drive an auto but my 330d is more fun !! I had a remapped Golf GTi Edition 30 DSG at the time (300bhp) and getting back into that after the VXR was more fun (apart from the lack of that noise). My Edition 30 was clearly quicker 30-70 ... by some margin - which surprised me ... though the remapped Golf had a reputation for being good remapped. I went and bought a Z4M Roadster in the end ... which felt lots quicker and lighter ! |

They have huge tuning potential due to the gm ls3 engine.
Buy a ready made supercharged model! I'd have an m3/m5/m6 instead tho!!

Was in my mate's tuned Monaco which is more or less the same thing it had something like a 2 grand exhaust fitted, sounded like a nascar never been in a car that turned so many heads. I do remember the brakes he had fitted were awesome.
No drives an m6 btw |

Cheers for the replies guys.
Budget was up to 18k dependant on the mood of the misses on the day. Having read peoples replies though im more dubious now than I was. Assumed circa 400bhp and rwd would have made for a good drive. As for m3 and m5, depreciation hasnt hit these as hard and the insurance is nearly double. Although they do say you get what you pay for.... |

Not really a great deal in it and when you consider the VXR8 was £35,000 new and the M5 was £65,000 the BMW has suffered bigger losses. I quite like them and all the reviews were positive about it. It was always viewed as a bargain M5 or AMG Merc, but when you can get the real thing for the same money it does become hard to justify. |

I just don't think the whole package would be as good as the 3 or 5 to be fair. Not to come across as sounding funny but to me its still a vauxhall. M5 will be about the same on fuel as the vxr8. Why don't you supercharge a v8 m3. 600 ish bhp or more depending on kit.

I dont think OP is in for an E46 M3. Think he has the v8 bug. In which case E9X M£'s are dropping into the 17s now, given they are high mileage but you can negotiate a lower mileage one down quite a treat. It is a buyers market after all.
I asked your budget because I think there are some lovely cars out there sub 20. such as the E60 M5 ballistic. Some very nice porkers. also some decent older AMG's for an unbeatable v8 soundtrack. All of which are more refined than the vxr8. No i havent driven one. SO yea my view is somewhat flawed but to be fair Clarkson is a fanny. Still though either way. Interesting... very interesting. |

As mentioned got the v8 bug a bit.
My view on the 8 was from my friends one. As I wont have the 12k to supercharge it like he has I think id always be a tad disappointed. The insurance on the m cars seems really odd. I can insure an 8 for 750 fully comp for myself. An e9x m3 starts at 1400 pound so im a bit lost as to the jump. Now the other half has a sensible car a v8 6 series could be in contention. The car is going to be a toy as such, used for weekends and holidays and only be taxed 6 months a year. The rest of the time it would be garaged keeping warm! |
