My wife drives our 320d e90, auto 2006, its currently only doing 24 mpg and managing a poor 300 / 320 mile to a full tank of diesel, ive had the garage change the egr valve along with the thermostat as the hidden menu was showing it running slightly cold. its only used for the school run and shopping trips both only being max 5 mile round trip but I would of thought that it still should be doing more mpg that what it is, any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sell the car and buy one more suitable for what the car is to be used for.

A diesel car for what your wife uses it for is totally unsuitable,a big bill for replacing/removing you DPF can't be that far off,I doubt it's seen a regeneration in mths doing those sort of journeys.

Buy a petrol car,better all round for what your wife uses a car for.

Edit:Has it got a DPF,perhaps not?

My LCI 320d will do over 50mpg on motorways etc but spend a few days with above average cold starts followed by stop, start round town etc & the average very quickly drops below 40 mpg. Used solely "for the school run and shopping trips" I doubt it would do much better than yours &, as Hotcoupe mentioned, I'd be looking at a new DPF fairly soon. Buy a smaller petrol, they're much more suited to that style of driving

thought about getting something else but as its an estate its perfect size for the kids and still has the boot space for buggy's and even the dog every now and then

Dont think it matters too much when its an automatic.

Tests probably about right. I never got out of the late teens in my 335d around town. It probably needs a good long blast to clean out if no dpf. Has it got droopy exhaust?

As others have said, the car will need a good long blast on the motorway to get the DPF to regenerate which may help a bit, plus it delays the costly replacement.

Ive got a 2007 320D. Mainly used for getting me too/from work and shopping, all only a couple of miles and I probably get a similar average to you. But once or twice a week I do a 100 mile trip on the motorways where it gets 50+mpg. They just hate stop start town driving

Ill do a swap with the missus once a week i think and give it a blast to work and back (approx 60 mile round trip with 10 mile motoway each way). Yes Andy it has a droopy exhaust, what does this mean ?

I believe these are pre dpf so will kick put some lovely black clouds if your missus has been driving it like this for so long

I'm not convinced when people just say, the car is not suitable for the type of trips you are making. My old 2006 320d was used just to drive through central London from my home 4 days a week or so, 10miles each way start stop stuff. I averaged 40mpg consistently.

Obviously a long run is going to give you better mpg but if you are careful and smooth you can get good results. I had the car for 3 yeas, clocked up 45k miles and it still ran like a dream.

Not suitable, behave chaps! My commute envolves pottering across the suburbs and I get 45mpg average, only difference being its a manual. Sounds like something not operating as intended.

It doesn't have a DPF it's a 2006. It's also not an ed model.

The non ed (164bhp) 320d is crap on economy. Pure and simple.

The 177bhp with ED and a DPF will be getting at least 10 more mpg around town.


I only ever got 26 from mine around town and did a much "better" kind of miles.. not just 1 mile journeys.
