Noticed whilst cleaning, I have a 3 inch crack in my rear M sport spoiler and a blister appearing. Fed up either caused by poor prep and paint or inferior material. Spoiler bought and painted and fitted by Bmw so should have been a top notch product. Outside of warranty and a pain. Written to BMW by just getting fobbed off by it's retro fit and outside warranty. Great!
Looks like I am going to have to get sorted by decent bodyshop. Customer services useless! My car an e90 330i. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. |

What kind of spolier is it? Lots of people (me included) have gone down the "cheap" copies route. You can buy off these off eBay for £50-100, mine came painted (near perfect paint match) and though its only 12months old has had no problems. Its stuck on with M3 tape so easy to replace it needed.

M sport spoiler, bought direct from BMW came painted and fitted with the correct bonding material, which is why I don't think I will be able to remove and refit new. BMW say I need to take it for a diagnostic check which means. I will have to pay for the check. Only to be told out of warranty unlucky.
I asked the same 'diagnostic check on bodywork'. Frustrated I think they want me to give up on this one. Tried to post a pic but failed. |

Hmmm, tricky one that. Can you not take it to a body shop who are experienced enough to take it off without damaging the paintwork. If they do, make it clear from the start that they will be responsible for the repair work.

I presume the bonded glue is something like sikaflex glue which is near enough impossible to remove without damaging the paintwork.
1 - try to tremove by using a fishing line/hair dryer warming up the area well and gently saw in between. Then using something like autoglym tar and glue remover to remove the residue 2 - Find a good bodyshop and see if they can repair/paint while the spoiler is in siitu 3 - Yank the spoiler off, buy a new one get it prepped/sparyed by decent bodyshop and may need work on the bootlid I would personally try option 1 knowing in the back of my mind a respray on the boot lid. Is the M sport spoiler the thin version like members have bought off ebay? If so I can only presume there is not much contact between that and boddywork so not much glue used so carefully heat up the area and cut through with fishing wire. |

No unfortunately it's the larger one that fits right across the rear. Going to price up first I think then look at the options. Just frustated that it's split apart and a bubble has appeared as it came through BMW.

Op How on earth did it crack? Weather damage or other? Also are you sure its an OEM BMW performance lip?
Reason being if you have full dealer history. They sometimes honour these kind of kinds as good will gesture even if its out of warranty. Any pics? P.s im not sure a hair dryer will work TBH maybe a heat gun would be better but only for a few secs. |

Sorry tried up loading a pic. Yes car has full history with extended warranty but they won't touch the spoiler. Going to have it priced tomorrow and check the split. Does anyone have the cost of a bmw diagnostic check? It must have been weather but that's annoying as it's colder in Germany than here. The dealer used this as an excuse to start with until I reminded him BMW is a global company and sell from northern Norway to the gulf. Through all climates and I wouldn't expect this to happen. Deffinately not damaged.

However I think you're dealer is taking the piss on so many levels, the spoiler is a cosmetic mod,not a mechanical/electrical fault, looking at a spoiler and seeing if a crack/blister exists could be done by a monkey! How old is the car,and how long has the spoiler been fitted, you mentioned it was a retrofit,so the spoiler postdates the manufacturing date of the car. BMW parts fitted by a BMW dealer have a two year guarantee,so if the buying/painting and subsequent fitting of the spoiler by the BMW dealer fall inside the last two yrs,you need to throw a few fecks at them and ask them when you can book the car in,so THEY can sort the problem out. Have you still got the receipt for the part, and the work the dealer carried out?

Spoiler has been fitted 3 years by BMW. I have written to BMW customer services and they have told me to put it in for a diagnostic check. I agree anyone can see that the crack has not been cause by damage and it it either inferior product or bad paint job. Customer services have not been helpful at all always putting obstacles in the way. Would almost end up paying full cost with a check and £100 excess on warranty so thinking is it worth it. Should I find decent body shop and fix it professionally.
Thinking customer services not good at all and could change motors when this one ready to be sold. I have showed customer services receipts for spoiler and fitting. Not interested infact they have now asked if it was retro fitted. They have a copy of the bloody receipts surely they can see it has been looking at they dates. Going for a quote now from another body shop to see what they say. Thanks for your comments. |
