ELV Problem

Last Thursday I received the dreaded ELV alarm, the steering wheel with the lock. It was yellow. I took the key out and opened the door, stuck the key back in and the car started.

Monday, I got the same thing but in red. Did the same actions with the same results. Tuesday, a repeat of Monday (red). Yesterday, a third red so I took it to the dealership (had three other problems to report to them, too). When I told them I had gotten the ELV alarm the SA didn't know what that was until I said it was the steering lock. She then said that it needed a new part (didn't elaborate), said it needed to be changed because it was a safety problem, and called the parts department to see if it was available. I'm taking the car in on Tuesday evening for repairs since Monday is a holiday.

When I went to start the car, I got a yellow ELV alarm but with a ratcheting sound coming from the steering column. Has anyone else heard this sound (on their car's steering)?

Exactly the same problem here. Going in to get steering column replaced September 10th.

the will do an idrive sofware update and replace the steering column, i hope you get a loaner

Actually, I don't need the loaner since I have a second vehicle. The dealership is a £2.50 bus ride away which beats a £14 taxi any day of the week.

My ELV and iDrive problem has morphed into a suspected CCC problem. The service department has had the car since Wednesday and Germany is trying to diagnose it remotely. The SA told me the ELV sensor didn't show a fault.
