Strange call from Sirius
When I got home today, I had an automated message from Sirius saying that I needed to correct/verify some information about my account or I might possibly have service discontinued. I just got my car at the end of July and activated my 12 months then. I also have had another radio with Sirius for a couple of years now, automatically charged to a CC on a quarterly basis.
I logged into their website and looked at my account. There is a red "Account Notification" box near the top claiming that "It's time to extend your subscription! Our records show that your service is scheduled to end, so pick a new plan that's right for you!". The ESN that they claim is expiring is the one for the new 335i, so I know that that's BS. I called the supplied 866 number and asked about it. The operator I got didn't quite know how to explain it, thinking that it was talking about the recurring quarterly unit. I pointed out that that one has been automatically-drafted for a couple of years now, the card has not expired, and nothing else has changed other than the new additional radio. She was at a loss. Note for the paranoid (and I am ), she never asked me any useful-to-scammers info like credit card numbers et al, beyond just my name, address, and phone number, which Sirius asks for anyway when you call. She specifically did not ask for my username and/or password, and she did seem to have information that was "inside" such as the 335i radio was shown as expiring in 07/2008. Thinking about it after the fact, I called their (different) 888 number from the Sirius website directly and described the above to the new operator. I gave her the 866 number I was told to call, which she didn't find in their directory, but said that that wasn't necessarily significant. She checked my account too, and also decided that nothing seemed amiss. I offered that perhaps this was some cute new Marketing ploy, given that it's been about a month since I activated this radio, and I just received their Welcome packet in the mail. She agreed that that might be true. She also offered to tag my account as "private" so that I wouldn't receive any future phone solicitations. (I never gave them an email address, so they can't get to me that way...). So I'm curious: has anyone else who recently activated their BMW Sirius radio had a similar experience? When I activated this radio, I decined to pick any type of billing plan for the interim such as buying a multi-year subscription, mainly because I wanted to see how well the radio worked in this car before committing to an extended payment. |
