Thumbs down Busted at a tint trap...

I just got busted at a "tint trap" in Edmonton. As I was driving, I saw 2 officers. One was just looking at cars and radioing the other officer. The second officer would pull over vehicles. I was one of them. I have 35% tint all around so it's still very light looking but I still got a ticket. $115. Absolutely absurd. There are people getting shot and robbed in the city but they still have time to piss people off and make probably 2-3 grand per hour doing something like this. Oh how I love this city...

That sucks!
It's a sad thing when the police resorts to childish tax collecting techniques, instead of doing something constructive like patroling the corrupt areas.

What is the law in Alberta regarding tinting? In Ontario it is illegal if the cops cannot see who are in the front seats and what they are doing.

I believe it is Illegal to have any aftermarket tint in the vehicle in Canada. Atleast that is what I was told by a Cop. In the past I got pulled over for speeding but he didn't click me for speeding so he ended up giving me a ticket for tint. At that time I just moved back from TO so I told the cop the Tint I had on my car was perfectly legal in TO and that he shouldn't give me a ticket for that because I just moved back from there (I still had the Ontario Plate) that is when the officer told me that any after market tint is illegal in Canada.

That's just too much generalization. He is banking on you to pay the fine instead of going to court.

I had a similar situation with my STi. THey gave me a ticket for an oversized exhaust. I wanted to go to court and say to the judge if it was not a cash grab and the rule is so important, why didn't the officer give me a 48 hour.

Obviously it wouldn't of helped my situation. As for tint in alberta , no tint o the front side windows, you can go stupid dark on the rear windows.

I have 17% inn the front
and 7% in the back
which is stupid dark, I just put my windows down when I see cops.

Was it EPS or RCMP, cause the EPS usually don't go after petty things like that.

Just look at a typical family mini van or SUV: Front and front side windows are factory tinted anywhere from E1 to E6 or E7 solar ray, which is allowed. A 4" strip on top of the windshied is allowed. The rear can be as dark as you dare or completely covered or no windows at all (like cargo vans).

So theoretically you can have the front and side windows darken up to the equivalent of E6 or E7 if factory tint is lighter than that.

The bottom line is: The cops want to be able to see who are in the front seats and what they are doing when they approach a vehicle.

Hmmm...

Where in Edmonton was the trap? I was driving to work yesterday and was going 80 in a 60 zone. I drove by an entrance to a sub-division and saw a cop with the lazer out pegging cars.

For some reason I didn't get pulled over, but the dude in the truck beside me got the wave in. I was clearly ahead of the truck by 4 car lengths. Come to think of it he had a lift kit and it looked like he was running illegal wheels.

The trap was at the north end of the high level bridge at the west entry point. I live in a building less than a block away and I was just exiting the parkade to get to the University and in less than 1 minute of driving I got pulled over. They were pulling over cars at a rate of about 1 car every 2 minutes. It was pretty sad...

I agree that 35% tint is fairly light, but unfortunately, still illegal on the front sides here. I was pulled over once for that, but not even given a ticket. It just gives those pricks another excuse to pull you over. Apparently, the officer must have had a change of heart after he talked to me, then explained he just pulled me over to find out what brand of wheels I had.

Nice! You do have an amazing ride...

Back on topic- it's also (from what I've been told) partially because of quotas the cops have; ie. number of speeding & infraction tickets they give out. They tend to get more creative in their search for 'offenders' towards the end of the month,..

The Edmonton police service seems to be in a very strict, agressive and intractable phase. I got pulled over to the tune of $115 bucks for having The Super Protector, one of those plastic license covers that distorts your plate so that the Edmonton Texas Cams can't get a bead on your numbers. My wife wanted to tell him off and I held her back because I knew that he was just waitng for an excuse to cuff her and take her to the station. I mean this guy was nasty and boiling inside I am just going to pay the fine and shut my mouth or they will be all over me wherever I go in the city.

But!!!! He was too wrapped up in his anger to notice that I had also sprayed my plate with Photostopper paint:rocks:

What was the violation printed on your ticket.

I received one early this week under Section65(i)(d) Vehicle equipment
and Section 70(i) of Ver-Window tint. Under Traffic Safety act

However when I looked up the Section 65 and Section 70 I found this.

Equipment standards 65(1) Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall not do any of the following:
(D) drive or operate a vehicle on a highway unless the vehicle and its equipment are used in a manner or as prescribed or provided for by regulation;

Section 70
RSA 2000 TRAFFIC SAFETY ACT Chapter T-6
Reports of peace officers re accidents
70 A peace officer shall, in the form and the manner prescribed by regulation, provide to the Registrar reports respecting accidents involving vehicles.

All I can say is it SUCKS all over Canada no matter where you live.
If the tint is Illegal, why do shops offer this service to people?
If my car is tinted and I get into an accident because of the tinting issue, its my problem and my fault.
The cops should issue warming instead

Great to see our taxpayer dollars and law enforcement resources put to good use.

And cops wonder why they are always fighting an uphill battle with public opinion and support.
