Quaife vs Wavetrac vs OS Giken
So I was over at the VAC Motorsports site looking at their LSD options for our 335d vehicles.
Here are the costs. Quaife - $2574.95 Wavetrac - $2499.95 OS Giken Superlock - $3074.95 OS Giken TCD - $3774.95 Keep in mind that these are prices when the LSD is built into your own housing. So I know about the Quaife and Wavetrac but don't know much about the OS Giken ones. Why are they so much more and would they be better in any way than the other two to justify that price? Here is the link from VAC Motorsports: Link |

The OS Giken is more race oriented as it is a full-locking clutch-type diff. I think it all depends what you use it for. The Quaife is going to be (much) lower maintenance, but technically a step down in terms or pure performance. Candidly, I think the OS may be overkill in our rides, but it is all about where you choose to make compromises.
The non-TCD version will also be more noticeable audible when compared to the Quaife. Btw, the OSs are OEM in many high end performancvehicles (think m and AMG), thus it is not too much of a stretch to put it in our rides. I just have trouble justifying the price point differential for additional maintenance and little added capability in most daily circumstances. |

Very well said. It's hard to justify that extra $1,200 for the OS Giken - TCD even though my long term goal is to track the car. Right now it's my DD.
Here's a good video on the OS Giken - TCD: |

Ya Chris. I heard the Superlock version of the OS Giken is definitely a lot louder than the TCD version.

I recommend Quaife for most street/occasional track customers anyways. OSG is for the guy who wants to take it to the next level, who has experience with and prefers a clutch style unit or just someone who wants the best of the best.

Mike, can you chose which cone springs OS Giken puts on the TCD before buying it? Also, do you guys at VAC take the clutch discs and WPC treat them? Last edited by GreekboyD; 02-12-2013 at 03:15 PM.. |

The car already exceeds my puny driving skills. Wouldn't want to make it too much more so. Like me driving an F1 car or using really good golf clubs.

A group buy for our cars would be pretty tough to do because of how hard it is to find cores for our differentials.

2. In my case, I will take my car in, plunk down $1,100 for a core deposit, and if my removed core proves worthy, I will get my $1,100 back in about 48 hours. At least that's how I understand the process.

I'd be in for a group buy. Perhaps once they build stock we can move on it.

I'm open to the idea of a sale on 5-10 units....
ps. did I mention that we are doing a M3 conversion, JRZ RS1s, VAC tune, VAC diff and more to a 335D soon? ;-)

I have a Superlock and it is basically silent. It makes no locking-related noises on the street and performs flawlessly on the track. Whoever told you either of these diffs make noise was trying to sell you a Quaife.

We suggest 99.99% of the time that you run it as delivered. Street, circuit, hill climb, drift all use the Super Locks with ultimate success.
I also strongly suggest the Super Lock - TCD is generally not necessary (unless you want the best of the best). You can not hear a super lock - we have one in our shop 135i and its no different (sounding) than the Quaife or Wavetrac that we had in it before.
